    Artist History
Eduard and Johannes Kutrowatz, who grew up in Burgenland, now live in Vienna. Their first piano teacher was Uwe Wolff, at the Joseph Haydn Conservatory of Music in Eisenstadt. They continued their studies at the Vienna University of Music, where they studied piano and conducting, as well as percussion and clarinet, which reflects their ideal of all round musicianship. It was their teacher, Renate Kramer-Preisenhammer, who first suggested that they study original compositions for four hands and for two pianos. They furthered their training through master classes with Karl Ulrich Schnabel in Freiburg and Franz Rupp in Lockenhaus. Their artistic path is documented by prizes in both national and international competitions, (including first prize in the section Piano Duo in Stresa in 1986). They have also earned recognition by such awards as the Boesendorfer Stipend and the Cultural Development prize of the province of Burgenland.

LONDON The sound of dreams "... The Austrians served up a forceful and empathetic pair of brother pianists, the Duo Kutrowatz, to unveil the main Schreker find: his piano duet version of ´The birthday of infanta´. ... As a piano duet experience it proved surprisingly successfull, with the best qualities of Debussy´s and Ravel´s pianism ..." But even at the age of 104, this one remains as forward-looking as ever; witness yesterday afternoon’s packed, season-opening concert at the University of Toronto’s Walter Hall. The performers were not only completely new to Canada, as has often refreshingly been the case at Women’s Musical Club events, they exhibited the talent and panache to merit their international career. Billed as the Piano Duo Kutrowatz, the brothers Eduard and Johannes Kutrowatz are Austrians from Haydn country, the province of Burgenland, who have already performed extensively in Europe and Asia, but are as yet anything but household names in music. Part of the reason has to do with their relatively recent arrival on the scene. Part of it also has to do with the fact that they are devoted to a highly specialized musical literature. At intermission yesterday afternoon, a local composer-pianist wondered out loud why his fellow composers even write music for two pianos. With up to 20 fingers in action, it can sometimes be hard to avoid producing a welter of percussive sounds. Johannes Brahms, himself a distinguished pianist, provided a case in point when he arranged his F Minor Piano Quintet for two pianos. Trying to preserve the score’s harmonic richness, he made it difficult for the performers to avoid textual clogging. But the brothers Kutrowatz understood the problem, gave strong contours to the melody lines in those chord-rich textures and avoided the pitfall of over-pedalling. It helped that they where a real duo and not just two pianists. They had obviously worked hard to match their tone quality and weight of attack. There was plenty of sonority in their playing, but there was also crispness of articulation that lessened the danger of producing aural mud. Happily, the same qualities carried over to the rest of their program. These weren’t just pianists, these were artists." The Toronto Star, October 19th 2001, William Littler
