Press Reviews
[Zeitgeist' Music & Entertainment Website] "... an album comprised of off-kilter pop nuggets..."
[The Irish Times]"... Resonance sounds like The Fall with Johnny Marr on guitar, while Disco Diva, a paean to Barry White, could be a soundclash of Dexy's Midnight Runners and garage rock... the acoustic guitar and horns-driven closer Choirs Of Angels is well-titled and very beautiful... overall, not quirky but eclectic... an assured, striking début."
[Where's the Craic' Music & Entertainment Website] "... Semi are the latest explosive mix of punk and grunge to emerge from Cork... their unique blend of hard edged lyrics coupled with the raw production by Thomas Mulcahy create a fast paced fusion reminiscent of the heydays of pop-grunge... songs such as the classic Copenhagen Street and even the up-tempo opening track When the Night Is Over provide a great insight into a band with great potential as both a live and studio band."
[The Sunday Business Post] "... 'Mervyn In Toronto' is another example of how to produce a fine album on a shoestring... the ten-song CD is choc-o-bloc with individual hooks and melodies... this album could sit quite comfortably in your CD collection alongside the best of 90's britpop."
[The Irish Examiner] "... They are a garage band in the sense that they sound like they are playing in a garage, but you know that they have bigger halls in mind: down the line, in their own good time... the shared vocals and jam session feel may lead to lazy Gomez comparisons, but despite their rootsy moments, Semi are a more forward-thinking outfit. Stand-out songs like Copenhagen Street and the lush closer, Choirs of Angels... should have US fans lapping them up, when they eventually get there."
[The Event Guide (Dublin)] "... A live-sounding album, they play what can best be described as occasionally demented indie garage rock, their fuzz guitar and thrashy drums sweetened by the additions of brass, keyboards and the melodic, riff-carrying bass playing... Semi manage to unite both a raw, feral energy and a broad pop understanding... 'Mervyn' may not be the most immediate debut in the world, but it is strong, and repeated listens reveal a band revelling in their own capacity for mischief and melody" |
