Pleasant on Punk Road: Pleasant Street
To be honest, I loathe most punk bands, but the brand of punk that Pleasant Street serves up was enough to make me grin. I recently saw one of their shows at Park Lawn Elementary, and they left me with many things to say and many others to remember. For one, their catchy punk riffs and hooks give their songs great appeal, and these are complimented by something not found often in the punk world, musicianship. Chris Short’s explosive drumming, Nick Woods’ energetic chording with his flying solos, and Chris Webster’s grooving bass all exemplify this. This all comes together and creates some greatly dynamic music that combines many different styles of music within their own, from alt-rock to reggae to swing. One of their songs, “7th Grade Attitude” goes through styles in this fashion. At one moment, the song is a blinding punk raunch, but at the next, they shift into a smooth reggae feel with Nick showing off his chops with one of his great solos, which unlike most punk solos, aren’t all downstrokes and actually have a definite, clear ending. Another song which demonstrates their diverse and dynamic qualities is their cover of “Stand By Me”, which starts off slow, like the original, and accelerates to a speed comparable to the Descendents’ song, “Coffee Mug”.
Besides all of these elements that make Pleasant Street exciting to hear, their live shows have a lot of energy and are exciting to watch. This is created in part by Nick and Dave’s clear connection with the crowd and their playing to them. They do this with lots of jumping, hectic dance moves and humor. A great example of this humor comes from the song “Internet Girlfriend”, about, obviously, someone’s Internet girlfriend. In the beginning of the song, Dave and Nick have a “conversation” where Dave plays the guy, and Nick plays the Internet girlfriend (great falsetto). Needless to say, it is incredibly tongue-in-cheek and actually funny!
Because of all of these reasons, I have concluded that Pleasant Street is a worthwhile band. They bring something fresh and new to the punk foray, an area that tends to be somewhat static. It’s really nice to see an enlightened punk band, so check them out! - Paul Feyertag (for MilwaukeeRocks.com); March 25th, 2002
