New Kids Ditch the Rock by Matt Trupia -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dolce Stil Nuovo breaks up Champaign-Urbana's rock-dominated music scene like a bully to a kid's block tower. Then they stomp defiantly away, smirking and giggling to themselves, and searching the playground for some lunch money to steal. The only difference is that they do it with a humble and dedicated focus that is an often overlooked asset to a rising group. This plan of attack, coupled with an innovative brand of music, is sure to make them one of the most peacable, respected, and downright funky bunch of bullies that our local scene has ever yielded. William Freyman, rhythm afficionado and founding member of the group, said that the project spiraled out of necessity-the kind musicians feel when they are of they verge on something exciting. "Basically I started looking for people to perform over the beats that I was producing because I wanted to add an element of jazz and hip-hop improvisation into an otherwise electronic show," said Freyman. "I had jammed with a few people, but Carl, the sax and clarinet player, seemed to really understand what I was going for. Together him and I decided to really take this concept a step further and try to take it out of the studio and start performing around town." Devotion and a knack for innovation made their decision to share their music with the public a wise idea. After having played a healthy amount of shows locally, they have recently lassoed a weekly gig at the chic new club, Orchid. "Every Tuesday we are performing at Orchid at 10:30," said Freyman. "These weekly shows are more like a jam session for us to showcase guest MCs and instrumentalists. Anyone is welcome to come ready to play." Exactly how did Dolce Stil Nuovo arrive at their unique sound? One look at their preferences in music make it easy to see how their new amalgam of styles was created. "Our influences are all over the place," said Freyman. "Just to name a few: DJ Premier, DJ Krush, Horace Silver, John Coltrane, the Orb, and the Beastie Boys." Whatever the influences behind the sound, the drum and bass-jazz-hip-hop rhythms that the group perpetuates are definitely driven by a common goal. "I think we all like to try out new things and have a good time," Freyman said. "Our sound varies from time to time; for example, if you heard us a month ago we sound very different now." The simplicity in their motto and their willingness to be both traditional and experimental allows for their ever-changing but always original method to appeal to people that are loyal to all genres of music. As one may expect, the birth of their songs is as organic as their reasons for making them. "Usually the tracks start with either a beat or a bass line," Freyman said. "Then we just jam on the tracks for hours. Sometimes we rock out the parking lot next door when we get a crowd listening to us." Their practicing is definitely paying off. Although they haven't released any of their songs yet, they are well prepared to. "Eventually we would like to record a full length cd that jumps around through all the different styles we have been doing," Freyman said. "We already have a fair amount of material recorded for this album but we are just waiting for the right time to actually release it." Not to fear, though, because aside from catching them at Orchid, you can also feel their vibe online. "You can check out some of the stuff in MP3 format on the Dolce website: http://www.audio8.com/dsn, and if anyone would like info or to be on our mailing list, they can email us at dolce@audio8.com," William said. How does the band feel about the recent notoriety that they have achieved? "I'm not sure if Dolce is quite 'notorious' but it does seem like we always have plenty of offers for gigs, which is definitely a good feeling," said Freyman. "We like playing live so if the audience seems to dig it then that just makes us play better." With the talent and motivation that Dolce demonstrates, it seems like a couple of punches from these groove bullies would be an honor to withstand.
