Artist description
Anuj has never listened to music.
In fact, no one simply "hears" or "listens to" music. Music is more than the sensory stimulus of sound, it is the relationship between the sound, the listener and the experience. The ears capture the sound but the mind and soul process, interpret and experience it in the context of one’s existence. This experience lasts long after the sound has stopped. It is this very realization that led Anuj on the journey that is only now truly beginning to unfold.
Self-immersed in music for much of his life, Anuj has explored many shades of sound throughout his time.
His musical curiousity has taken him on a journey of several years through everything from jazz tuba and saxophone, to orchestral percussion, piano, Indian-classical tabla, and electronic production. With initial experimentations in production beginning in the fall of 2000, he has ventured a long way to building the Omnesia Studio, sharing the same name as the independent record label he also founded in 2002.
Having waded in the waters of many musical styles, he has developed a sense of instrumentation and arrangement all his own. Anuj has begun to develop a style and a sound that is as much a product of his environment as of his mind. Blessed with the opportunity, Anuj has worked with many artists who are leading the modern movement of sound, including Tabla and Vocal genius Cassius Khan, nationally acclaimed vocalist and flutist artist Meera Varghese, captivating Kathak dancer Amika Kushwaha, as well as lyrical gurus Vivek Pathak and Amir Aziz. Sessions with collaborations of such artists are nothing short of magical, show-
casing individual talents unified under the umbrella of Anuj’s vision.
Stating himself that he and his music are rooted "neither here
nor there", Anuj parallels his existence and his sound to that of a detached lotus flower, which although rooted nowhere, continues to grow and develop in its fluid environment. Growing up in Edmonton and Toronto, Canada in the midst of the 21st century North-American cultural experiment, a hundred sounds from a hundred nations were just outside Anuj’s window. Where then would the borders be drawn ? Such a thought lead to this conclusion:
"If I’m an Indian playing Italian music on the Chinese border, everyone in China is gonna hear it, whether the border guards like it or not. Now the music is no longer Italian, Indian or Chinese".
Much noise is yet to be made by this young artist and visionary, whose musical journey is unfolding in a time that is dynamic, uncertain and yet as bright as the human experience itself.
