Artist description
So many simplistic terms can be uttered about not so simplistic bands these days that in most respects seem to undermine the integrity of the music. Labels such as "all girl," "fashion-rock," or "arty" seem to jump out of critics more often than actual honest musical assessments. In regards to Mt. Pleasant, Michigan's Anathallo, the word "young" is likely to be tossed around the most. This generic categorization, however, cannot do justice to the heart, passion, and maturity that comes across when you see the seven-member ensemble take the stage, faces glowing, happy and tense all at the same time, knowing that what they do as a band actually means something to themselves and others.
Their debut offering, "Luminous Luminescence in the Atlas Position," arrives as a majestic breath of air, combining the emotion and urgency of Elliott with the sonic attack of similar-minded "orchestra's" like Godspeed You Black Emperor. Crunching guitar melodies swim in the same seas as bombastic stop start drumming, expressive and bouncy bass-lines, and harmonious bursts of brass. Subtle, yet inventive trickles of drum machine and keyboard round out the Anathallo experience, as vocalist/guitarist Matthew Joynt displays understanding of faith and hope, yet still grapples with his own mortality, proclaiming in "At the Lowest Point", "…I am merely a man, crying out in distress. Scorn has hardened my heart and left me feeling empty, so alone. It's fading, help my faith to remain."
Though the group may show some degree of youthfulness, it comes strongly in the form of exuberance and charm. Whatever labels Anathallo garners in the future, one word can be used to overshadow all other categorizations: "honesty." --Ryan Allen(Red Shirt Brigade/Journalism major at Central Michigan University)
