Artist History
Born in Michigan of Norwegian heritage, Lisa was raised in France, the Philippines and the great plains of South Dakota, giving her a broad perspective on culture and societal concerns.
Trained extensively in theater, Lisa attracted some attention singing a capella in Los Angeles area coffee houses. She was accepted into the Screen Actors Guild for writing and performing a song in the feature film "Under Surveillance". Following that, Verlo had two songs included in a piece on Showtime.
After the '94 earthquake condemned her Santa Monica apartment, Lisa spent a few years traveling across the country touring the coffee-house circuit between festivals with her Chap book "Pieces".
In '96 she was in the studio working on a CD of spoken word and music titled 'HOME' which she released and toured with in '97. Back on a creative roll, Lisa has spent the past few years writing and recording new material in somewhat of an alternative pop rock direction.
Eager to get back on the road, Lisa Verlo seeks, through performance of her work, to dramatize an insight of aesthetic and humanitarian purpose.

Press Reviews
Lisa Verlo evokes feelings of Billy Holiday's sultriness, Peggy Lee style story telling, and Ricky Lee Jones' musical approach. Nordic Folklore flavors the soul searching lyrics of EAST OF THE SUN, a haunting, neo-classic, eclectic ballad.

Lisa's work stands on tipy-toes to tickle the tummy of poetic sensibility.

Lisa Verlo .... In the Springs I met this dazzling performance poet and singer that I'd heard of for quite some time. She did a lovely a capella song of her own composition at a delightful private
poetry gathering sponsored by Poetry West in the spacious home of a local doctor. I'm hoping
that someday we'll talk her into coming to Telluride to perform for us.

...noise....Battling for our attention, melting our patience faster than jello in a microwave.......then, there is Lisa Verlo's voice. Church bells, harps, choirs of effervescent angels - sappy stuff like that - doesn’t even come close to describing it........a long cool stare in a good film noir....a voice that should be heard.

Lisa Verlo's performances are like hurricanes: defined and rehearsed yet containing the edge of great force which controls the arena. Her poems - both monologues and lyrics - contain sassy wit, city humor and gentle insight. I recommend her.

The first piece jumps right out at you because the production is so good, and the song is so cute and seducing. What took me by surprise was the poem 'It Can Only Hurt' unique, individual and patient delivery, timing and beautiful voice. Did I mention the long legs and high hips? 'Talk To Me Like A Tree' might be the finest romantic poem I've ever heard.

The liner notes on this refer to "Spoken lyrics by Lisa Verlo." This is a good hint to the direction of Verlo's art. With the musical assistance of Chris Millner, she explores the boundaries between lyrics and poetry. These pieces are more than poems but not quite songs. The result is a slick, professional sound and some very pleasant listening.
