Artist History
Abdel Kabirr is the author of 'Gumbay Dance', an album which hit the charts in the mid nineties both in Europe and USA. A founder member of the 'Gelewarr Band' in Banjul (The Gambia), Abdel started singing at the age of 19 with 'The Bag of Fames' together with Ebou Touray, Boy Njie, Charles Campbell, Dodou Bammy-Jagne, Jeng and Pa Boy Cole.
Malick Secka, the then producer of the 'Supreme Eagles Band', spotted Abdel's talent and immediately signed him to join the Supreme Eagles.
The band went to Dakar in Senegal to perform at a 'concours orchestral' in a performance at which Abdel captured the hearts of thousands of people within the crowd. Other bands present included Halam Un, Tropical Jazz, Merrymakers, Damel Band and the late Jodi Laayti Bamba Faye.
The Supreme Eagles later became the Super Alligators under the management of Rife Faraje. Two years later the bands name was changed to Gelewarre Band. Through these years Abdel was the lead singer until Bamura and Churchill Drammeh left for Germany. Abdel then took over as keyboard player along with Bai Janha on lead guitar and Oussou Lion Njie on drums. Musa Ngom joined as lead singer.
It was in 1980 that Abdel took up a solo career and was accepted as one of Sene-Gambia's best singers, and a West African star, with the release of 'Motherland Dearest', which culminated in a tour of Sene-Gambia with Yousou Ndour and the Super Etoile.
The album 'Gumbay Dance' was a world wide success after Abdel performance in Delft - Holland, alongside Mory Kante, Lucky Dube, Kofi Olimede, Oumou Sangare and others. Abdel has toured different parts of Europe, Asia and the USA with great success and appreciation of his audience.
Abdel's new album 'Takanderre' expresses his belief that the powerful rhthyms within African ethnic music can be blended with contempory hip-hop to fill you with the irresistable urge to dance. |
