Artist History
It's February of 1998, and I just returned home to the Upper West Side of New York City, Manhattan from a National Broadway tour of Hal Prince's SHOWBOAT. One night, after I finished washing the dishes in my apartment, something happened. It was as though a bomb exploded right in front of me! Brad H. Houghton, who was my roommate at the time, couldn't wait to have me listen to what he had finished so far. He pulled me into his room and played some material he had composed for a musical concept that was brewing in his head for a long time. "Twilight" was the musical and "Dreams" was the first song he presented to me. When he had finished, my eyes were bellowed up in tears and I screamed, "This bitch is mine and I intend to be the first to sing it!" For the longest time I’ve always known him to be a musical theatre junkie of some sort. Always updating me with the latest news on what’s what on Broadway. Finally, thanks to computer technology today, the time had come for him to arrive and put his musical idea’s down on paper. Just when I thought I knew him! After listening for only a few moments, a feeling of inspiration immediately surged through me like a lightning bolt!Brad started writing individual stories of a group of New York City characters in a piano bar and a rough outline on how to put those stories across. He decided just to start writing and see what may come out. Mr. Houghton's intention was to write a rough draft and then take a look at what he had. Then start to shape it from there. In March of 1999, he completed an early draft of the first act and proceeded to work on act Two. Since April of 1999 he began to collaborate his idea with other's such as dramaturg’s Ralpheal Pucitti and Gina Green. Currently, he (and others) is working to reshape the show before making it available for readings and developmental workshops. Today, you might find Brad or Gina riding a ferry in and out of Staten Island, living in a 8 X 12 room, temping 3 days out of the week in an office somewhere in Wall Street, or waiting on tables, living off of pasta or peanut butter and saving every penny they can just to push "Twilight" out there. Some think they’re out of their mind, but after hearing how "Twilight" has developed since that night back in February, I believe they know exactly what they are doingI feel fortunate enough to already be a part of this project. After you listen to this music, I hope you too will have the same hopes and dreams I share for "Twilight's" future! |
