Press Reviews
"...a rump-shaking funk collective.
On it's debut CD, the seven-man band serves up
healthy portions of fun but avoids the more a
aggressive fusion favored by distant soul-cousins
The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Above and Beyond the Call of Booty instead
offers groovy bass lines backed by bright
horn and sax fills."
The Columbus Dispatch Nov 11th, 1999
"Mescalito cannot possibly lose,
with a James Brown soul fixation,
a boatload of sassed up female vocals,
a touch of hip hop freakiness and enough
low end to level a city block, the eight
member funk collectivebrings the house down
with BOUNCE. A slickly produced CD that
spreads seven tracks over 40 minutes, blowing
a wave of guitar feedback over the motown jams
every now an then for sonic variety"

Mescalito (apparently named after a mountain in
California) refers to itself as a funk band, pure
and simple. Unlike most self-promoting hyperbole,
though, this actually sells the group short, as
the Columbus octet is more well-rounded than this.
Sure, Mescalito offers up some authentic funky
grooves; with a horn section bleating on top of
the bass and keyboards, you can't help but bring
it, so to speak. However, looking at each of the
seven tracks shows a challenge to convention.
Most notably, Hittin' The Street is a film noir
soundtrack and Hold On I'm Comin', in Mescalito's
hands, is Motown drama melded with Stax instrumentation.
Only disc opener Shake Your Butterfly fits the funk
mold, and even that compares to a rousing '40s
jazz effort with the twin-diva vocal attack.
Those three tracks should make up a nifty EP
in its entirety, but instead, the disc comes
with a radio edit and an instrumental version
of two of the three above mentioned tracks
(only Hold On isn't reprised, or credited as
the R&B staple cover that it is).
It's a bit unnecessary, and actually, the
sophisticated, smooth nature of the three
original tracks make you wish there were more
tunes, not remixes.
