Press Reviews
***** This one-man band from the suburbs of Chicago has been doing the home recording thing for many years; “Rockin on the Internet” is Leal’s latest and best, with a sound that falls neatly between the multi-tracked production values of Jiffipop and the softer Lennonesque side of Jeremy. "Kiss the Girl", "Edge of Victory", and "Question Eyes", are gorgeous midtempo tracks, but Leal sneaks in a fast one now and then like the excellent “With Me”. A very solid disc of Power Pop! ***** Julian Leal comes out of Romeoville, IL and his music has a very 70s retro pop-rock approach. It kinda reminds me of acts like Raspberries, Hooters, Romantics, and Phil Seymour, although I think Julian Leal's music is better and does actually have more AOR similarities than the just mentioned acts. Some songs on the tape he sent me remind me of the early 80s records of Rick Springfield and also the old Eddie Money comes to mind every now and then. There were 20 songs on the tape which is available on 2 separate CDs. Julian is a fine musician who can write decent material and has actually created kind of an own melodic pop-rock sound. If you like one song, you'll love them all. My favorites though are "You & I" and "Tonight" which are both classy early 80s melodic AOR/Pop-rockers a la Rick Springfield (circa 'Success hasn't spoiled me yet') and Nelson (circa 'Life'). I really like this style which is easy and very catchy. Other good tracks are "Lonely One", "Edge Of Victory", "Virtually Mine", "Doing Them Wrong", "Dream Girl", "Roller Skates" and "No One For Me" (pure early 80s westcoast AOR). At first sight I thought I was going to listen to a bunch of very quirky pop-rock oriented songs, but a lot of the tracks feature some great piano-keys which gives the melodic pop-rock of Julian a touch of early 80s AOR/Radiorock. If you like any of the mentioned acts, you should check out this guy! (Gabor Kleinbloesem/Strutter'zine) ******************************************************************
***** Even though Julian Leal began taking guitar lessons when he was 7, it wasn’t until high school that he really developed an interest in playing the guitar. He became a member of a variety of garage bands that played for such events as high school parties. Immediately after high school Leal got hooked up with a band and found himself playing 5 to 7 nights a week in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana. After that band broke up Leal turned to songwriting and produced his own albums and singles. His single “Get Away” received national and international recognition when it received play on American Bandstand’s Rate-a-Record. Leal returned to school and throughout his college days he continued to write songs and play in several nameless, now defunct bands. Leal received a Bachelor’s degree from Columbia College and began a career in social work. Now performing as a solo artist his new CD “Rockin On The Internet” has just been recently released, Leal has found a new market on Mp3.com. Leal’s previously released material can also be found on the Mp3.com site. (Denise Baran/Herald News) *********************************** |
