Artist description
Somewhere between a sonic boom and the sound of your pulse lies the music of Joe Whyte. A singer/songwriter from the New Jersey/New York City area, Joe simultaneously released 2 CDs in summer 2002 - a solo acoustic CD, Acoustically Yours and the full-band EP, Four and No More. These releases are the follow-up to his 1999 full-length album, Heavyweight, which earned rave reviews (see below) and radio airplay. Inspired by melody-driven artists such as The Beatles, Neil Finn and Travis, Joe has crafted a sound that is distinctly original, yet user-friendly. In addition to performing at various clubs in New Jersey and New York City, Joe is planning a tour of East Coast clubs and colleges for Summer 2003, as well as another solo acoustic tour of Ireland. Nominated for Asbury Music Awards in 2000, 2001 and 2002 for Best Male Solo Performer, one review highlighted his -unconfined vocal range- and called him -multifaceted in performance- Wanting to be more than the typical singer/songwriter, Joe strives to create poignant textured music that makes you think, makes you feel and makes you scream for more. |

Press Reviews
The Joe Whyte Squads latest EP, Four and No More, contains simple songs with a rough edge...Whyte has a talent for giving a song a subtle twist, without turning away from its main musical or lyrical theme. (The song)Breaking Your Code has the melodic appeal of any recent radio hit. Whytes squad is a tight one that has obviously honed their chops - bass lines as catchy as its melodies, its drumbeat drives, but stays at right speed limit, the guitar leads are filled with song-complementing arpeggios and volume swells reminiscent of Tom Pettys axe-slinger Mike Campbell. Whytes vocals start from the mid-range and he strategically uses vocal vibrato to add more life and punch to his songs. Whyte has a knack for absorbing the world around him and presenting it as a mural of words and music.-Josh Davidson, Chorus and Verse..........................A promising local talent with a genuine pop jones, Whyte checks in with an outstanding debut that boasts a Blur-meets-Radiohead-British-blush bolstered by an uncanny knack for layering as many Split Enz-worthy pop hooks as possible onto 11 truly enjoyable and, more importantly, very marketable, potential singles. - Al Muzer, The Aquarian Weekly..........................I've listened to this disc more than any other in the past year! It was several months before I had it reviewed, because I wasn't letting go of it without the promise of getting it back. As with all great discs, the songs most favored, change over time, from the hooks of "Universe", "In My Mind" and "Here It Comes" through "So obscene" and smack down to "Life support" this is a thoroughly enjoyable disc, and it shall remain in the top stack of my personal collection for many years to come. - Paul Bultman V.P. Indie Music.com.........................Not only does this guy have a very melodic voice, but he ain't too bad to look at either! I really dig this CD, it actually took some thought to make it, and it certainly shows. I hear influences from Ben Folds Five to The Beatles, with a little 80's new wave and a smidge of alternative. His lyrics are very insightful, backed by some amazing riffs. Each track varies, from "So Obscene," which is a more rock, power track to "Forbidden," which has much more of a ballad/bluesy component to it. When I actually hear quality music, it completely shocks me. If Mr. Whyte has the performance to back up his mouth, then he will soar high! -Lauren Facciodomo, NJ Rocks......................A songwriter born in the Northeast but spending some time in Ireland, Joe Whyte brings some of the pop stylings from the British Isles with him. Weaving it with a pulse of American influences like early Bob Seger and Springsteen make for some enjoyable songs. The simple but thought-provoking lyrics are well portrayed by Joe's crystal clear emotive voice, and the musicianship is tight but full of life with a sweet intensity tucked neatly in the background. A songwriter needs passion and talent, and with his first full length CD, Joe proves to have both of those qualities. -Mark E. Waterbury, Music Morsels..........................Solid pop that shoots for the far-out funkiness of Curtis Mayfield, the rootsy cool of early 70s Rolling Stones and the intelligent, 80s new-wave charm of Squeeze...infectious but tasteful sound... and a talent for odd but thought-provoking rhymes. Whyte might go far. Check it out. -Robert Makin, CourierNews
