Press Reviews
AKRON NATIVE PLAYS TO FUN BUT TOUGH CROWD "Country music capital dances to, appreciates R&B-flavored pop with Mitchell as singer. Chris Mitchell knows about pressure. Not only does the Akron native make his living by singing with his band the Collection in the bars of Nashville, Tn., better known as the Country Music Capital of the World, he does it by singing R&B-styled pop. ``Nashville isn't very different from any other city,'' said Mitchell, on a recent visit to Cuyahoga Falls.``They like all types of music,'' he continued. ``The big difference is that they really know music. If they don't like you, you're going to hear about it. ''Mitchell doesn't hear about it much. He just hears about how his reputation in Nashville continues to grow. ``He's primed to move beyond Nashville's nightclubs, so the time to catch him is now,'' said a reviewer for the Nashville Scene, a local entertainment weekly, recently. The Nashville CitySearch Web site says, ``Hands down, this is the most fun local show, and the house is always packed with dancing, gyrating, and wildly clothed fans.'' Mitchell started out as a vocal performance major at Kent State University in 1986 before heading to Belmont University in Nashville in 1990. He had gotten some work singing jingles in Cleveland before he headed south, but Mitchell wanted to see what would come next. ``I just wanted to have fun,'' he said. ``That's really what this music is about.''Mitchell's live show is an extension of his drive to have fun -- a mixture of R&B covers that show off his 4 1/2-octave voice and his own danceable originals. The set includes everything from It's Raining Men and the theme to The Jeffersons to Somewhere Over the Rainbow. He will go from credible versions of Chaka Khan's Ain't Nobody or LaBelle's Lady Marmalade to his own Prince-influenced Freak or house-tinged Roomful of People. Mitchell's style lands him somewhere between today's current boy band explosion and groove-mining singers like George Michael. His live shows led to a deal with the Illinois-based indie label Excalibur and bigger, better shows in Nashville -- opening for KC & the Sunshine Band and George Clinton last year. His Chris Mitchell CD has been doing well in Nashville.``I'm getting ready for the next level,'' said Mitchell, who has another CD's worth of material already written. ``This year, I want to start moving outside of Nashville.'' Glenn Gamboa is the AKRON BEACON JOURNAL's pop music writer....~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Chris Mitchell has become the Nashville club phenomenon. With a flamboyant performance style and a churning,high-energy take on funki-fied dance music, Mitchell and his large band, The Collection, have been packing nightclubs largely through word of mouth. A top-notch songwriter and arranger, he recently recorded a demo that suggests his music maintains its pumped-up power on tape. With his fun, accessible sound, he's primed to move beyond Nashville's nightclubs, so the time to catch him is now." NASHVILLE SCENE - Nashville, TN |
