Press Reviews
Cornerstone has always been a great place for me to find new bands. Every year I label a particular band that year’s “diamond in the rough.”
This is usually a band that I’ve never heard of and one in which I walk away from their show thinking I really need to tell others about. These
shows also tend to be “the back alley” concerts that are run on a generator behind an established stage or even in the middle of the camping
area. This year’s Cornerstone diamond in the rough is a band called Outsight, and I found them playing next to the porta-potties by the
skating ramps one afternoon. By the way, the last diamond in the rough band I found by the skating ramp was a band called Zao.
One listen to these guys live was enough to stop me as I was heading to a press conference at Cornerstone. At first I thought I heard Andrew
from Project 86 singing with these guys. As I turned the corner I realized that this band had two vocalists and it was not Andrew at all with a
mic in his hand. I was amazed at the energy of these guys live and had to watch the rest of the show. It was clear to me that I must purchase
the CD afterwards.
This CD entitled “Shadows and Dust” has some enticing tunes to offer. I have to wonder why more people don’t know of these guys as
Outsight has a sound that is quite popular at the moment. Let me first say that I cannot find another band that sounds exactly like this
Georgia six piece, but I would say that if you imagine a heavy Linkin Park with more raw vocals that you could generally describe this band
although they certainly have a melodic side to them. The diversity of Outsight makes it hard to pigeon hole their music, which to me is a
positive asset. Vocals are both sung and screamed at full volume with guitars ranging from heavy overdrive groove to a very melodic style.
Most everything here is well done and the CD itself is recorded with good quality. Many of the songs change pace making each track its own
adventure. The only negative thing I would point out is the fact that some songs are over five minutes and have a tendency to drag on too
long.
Overall, I must at least encourage music fans to give these guys a listen. I think they have a lot to offer in the near future if someone can just
help them with exposure. As for me, I will keep this CD near my player knowing that at least a hand full of these tracks are very good.
