Now this I can enjoy!
It's hard to find good ethnic music if you don't know what you want to hear. Take me for example . . . I love great rhythmic music and I've always enjoyed music with true african influences, but it's hard to know what to look for, I just have to stumble upon it. Thanks to Fojeba's review request, I've stumbled upon something today that's going to stick with me.
Now I've heard a lot of world music, so I am not exactly uneducated when it comes to different styles. And when I heard the first strains of "Peu Pouh Teu", the first thing that came to mind is some Portuguese music I got from my uncle once from Brazil. The thing that always stuck in my mind was the use of subtlety in rhythms, the gentle tunes that develop around mild soothing vocals. It's a sound that seems just so natural, so familliar. And Fojeba's got that sound in his pocket, he owns it. This music is catchy and almost sublime!
The background of percussion, guitars and what sounds like calliope, just rolls over you like a waterfall, as his deep and textured vocals lure you into this new world. You can't listen to this music and not be moved. I know I've found something here I'm going to have to dig deeper within. I'm sure when you listen, you'll agree.
The bottom line is that this Cameroonian musician has a firm grasp on his native music, and he's doing a good job at presenting it for the world to hear. This song comes with my high recommendation.
