Artist description
The lineup is solid. The songs are tight. In the Spinal Tap tradition, Fake blurs the line between parody, homage, and self-indulgence, claiming dozens of direct influences but no encompassing comparisons. Of course, these needless descriptive efforts are secondary to but one crucial fact: FAKE WILL ROCK YOUR FACE OFF. |

Artist History
It all started with a Nuclear Blast DVD.
Fake was formed in the Summer of 2001 when Matt Kesler and Josh Skiles
had almost given up on getting a band together. Over a year after the collapse
of their locally semi-infamous metalcore project, Downside, the two had resigned
themselves to recording cover songs on Matt's computer for their own amusement.
Then they discovered Children of Bodom. Josh had bought the
Death is Just the Beginning... Vol. 6 compilation DVD, and the two were transfixed
by the visual and musical absurdity of the cliché-filled video for
Children of Bodom's "Every Time I Die". They promptly co-wrote "Ocean of Sorrow"
for the express purpose of creating a cheesy metal video in the woods behind Josh's
back yard. Steve Chovanec showed up while they were writing and followed along on bass,
though he'd never played the instrument before, and became the bassist for the band that
didn't yet exist.
Soon after, the three started jamming along with Josh's friend Tubby (Chris Brock) on drums.
Chris Hawk was added as a second guitarist partly out of necessity, but mostly due to his
constant presence in the background of Josh and Matt's previous musical ventures.
The five churned out a few songs and several ideas from their ad hoc jam sessions, and
decided to build a semi-serious project around the idea of "fake music": writing original songs
based on the numerous stupid clichés of heavy metal and rock music.
Nolegzz (Matt Hall) joined the project after coming to practice to hang out and promptly being
designated by Josh as "back-up man" to fill the vocal gaps when Josh's voice tired of switching
from falsetto wailing to death-metal growling.
The six decided that Fake was the only appropriate name for their band. The musical
sincerity was fake, the sentiments were fake, the lyrics were fake, the poses and "stage rants"
were fake, the second vocalist's legs were fake, and the fan base was sure to be mostly fake
as well. Thus the six departed on the path to international fame and fortune. |
