    Artist description
The facts are: Sarah Harmer is currently on break as the lead singer and songwriter of Weeping Tile, the Kingston, Ontario-based band who released an EP in 1994 and two full length recordings in 1995 and 1997. She grew up on a farm in southern Ontario, the youngest of six children. After studying at Queen's University in Kingston, she moved to a farmhouse at the edge of town, where she currently resides amidst blue herons and glowing sunsets. Sarah's solo debut, SONGS FOR CLEM, was an intimate release of popular country chestnuts meant only as a gift for her father. It soon earned high-praise from a bevy of critics throughout Canada, and inspired Billboard's Larry LeBlanc to describe it as "the most intimate, personalized and tasteful roots-styled album I've heard in years." YOU WERE HERE marks her U.S. debut as a solo artist, released by Rounder/Zoë on August 29, 2000. But like so many things, the facts are hardly all of it. Hype won't explain, but in the interest of an introduction, suffice it to say that Sarah Harmer has made a compelling arrival. She deftly tows the line between poetry and rock. Her crafted songwriting is thick with nuanced emotion, equal parts quiet longing and confrontational immediacy. Her voice is sensual and earthbound, and it hints at the kind of elegant regret that isn't self-pitying but just is. Though she inspires instant recognition, she is completely un-placeable. Sarah Harmer is here, and more than likely, here to stay. "This album shows some of my little wounds," says Sarah. "My hurt feelings. My reverence for natural beauty. My relationships and love for people. There are a lot of 'you's' in these songs. (Or, as we say in Canada, 'youse'.) Most of them are people I know. Or knew." "you don't do what I want you to" UNIFORM GREY "knowing that you've been bad" AROUND THIS CORNER "there's a coffee stain around your eye" COFFEE STAIN "you were here" YOU WERE HERE "take off your things" LODESTAR "you live out where the street ends" BASEMENT APT "you can come, you can stay." THE HIDEOUT "did it pass while you were looking back, waiting?" WEAKENED STATE "love, I see you there." OPEN WINDOW (THE WEDDING SONG) "you're breathing fire but you're not bringing back what's dead." DON'T GET YOUR BACK UP "there you are tucked in the scene." CAPSIZED "...I should say there's a 'you' in every one." YOU WERE HERE is a remembrance of things past, and as Sarah explains, "A hybrid. A clarinet. A drum loop. Stories with hooks. Love of love. Pain and fear. Dark shadows cast over boundless faith. Belief and gratitude. Little stories." Sarah Harmer will tour relentlessly throughout North America this fall, in a trio that includes cello, bass, drums and guitar. Until then, she'll be strumming along on the back porch, singing to herself, waiting to ride. You'll wish you were there.
