Now if you were lead guitarist for former 10,000 Maniacs singer Natalie Merchant, and you just came off a world tour for Merchant's multi-platinum record "Tigerlily," would you up and quit the band? Hey, maybe you wanted freedom to do your own thing. I can understand that. So you for your own band, Furslide, and you get signed to Virgin records, win rave reviews for your live shows, but again you promptly disband before you make it big. That's a little harder to understand. So here you come again, Jennifer Turner, with your new band, Inner and I can't help but feel like your a girl who cried wolf, or record deal, or "I quit!" But then I stuck your CD in my player and suddlenly "I get it." Instead of playing second fiddle to Merchant, instead of being limited by the tight machinery of Furslide's highly evolved sound, you're doing what you like. Suddenly I'm reminded of the raw power of early P.J. Harvey and the seething emotion bubbling out of Liz Phair's happy melodies. You are not Natalie Merchant's clone. You may, however, be a powerful albeit quiet new voice in indie rock. I'll see you, Jennifer Turner and Inner at SLO Brew this Tuesday October 2nd.
