Press Reviews
"Problems at my job prevented me from seeing many shows last week (and it looked like a great week for music in Omaha), but I did manage to catch Hawthorn at the Ranch Bowl during the Pinpoint CD release party. My lack of knowledge and understanding when it comes to hardcore music and the new metal was my main concern when I was offered this column. These styles of music are a very predominant subject on SLAM Omaha and how am I (late 20’s, pop music pansy) going to tackle these bands? All I can say is I’ll try my best and please feel free to add your comments/complaints in the section below this column. Hawthorn. The set started out with the singer waving around a well-endowed rubber dildo and then proceeding to umm interact the dildo with a decapitated mannequin head. I personally can’t imagine a better way to grab everyone’s attention. Hawthorn is obviously a young band and it seemed to take a few songs before they fully gelled on stage. I made a point to remember the name of one song in particular (which I forgot, but it was about four songs into the set) where it all seemed to come together and brought me back to the hardcore I used to listen to many years ago. The band later invited members of other bands up to the stage to “jam” (how things did not get broken during this song I will never know) which ended up being mass chaos, but it looked like the band and the crowd enjoyed it. The band has energy on stage that can only be described as dangerous. Throughout the whole set I was cringing waiting for the manic singer to electrocute someone, break something, or stick the dildo in the wrong place. It’s about time that feeling was brought back into music. I just hope it stays a feeling and never becomes a reality as I hope to see the growth of this band in the near future."
