Artist History
Dawn Dineen is the vocalist, guitarist and songwriter featured on the CD "A Thousand Yarns". A native of Maryland and currently based in Washington, DC she has been performing a blend of original electric-folk and modern-rock music since 1990 as a solo artist and in several groups.
Released independently in 2002, "A Thousand Yarns" is a collection of highly personal songs delivered in the tradition of guitar-wielding, contemplative songstresses à la Suzanne Vega, Natalie Merchant and Aimee Mann.
The CD "A Thousand Yarns" features Dawn Dineen on vocals, guitar and bass, and Berklee School of Music graduate John Sutton on drums. Dawn and John met in 1994 and began a musical partnership that resulted in several years of performing Dawn's original music as a unique duo (vocals backed by guitar and drums only), eventually recording "A Thousand Yarns" together in Dawn's home studio.
The technical side of recording music is as much a passion for Dawn Dineen as creating music. In 1994 she received notable engineering credits including "Mix Engineer" on "Sacred Ground", a release by acclaimed acappella group Sweet Honey In The Rock and "Assistant Engineer" and "Backing Vocalist" credits on "In The Middle Of The Night" by vocalist Vikki Childs featuring Nils Lofgren on guitar.
"A Thousand Yarns" was recorded entirely by Dawn Dineen in a modest 16-track home studio. During the mixing and mastering process Dawn had the fortune to informally team up with friend and veteran recording engineer Bob Vogt who has worked with a long list of major talents from Melissa Etheridge, Sting and Belinda Carlisle to U2, Syd Straw, Neil Young and more.
Self-recorded and produced, "A Thousand Yarns" by Dawn Dineen is a refreshing combination of strong female vocals, poetic phrasing and visceral moodscapes. Indie-Music.com, a well-known website that highlights independent artists, called Dawn's work "...beautifully structured, melding together... hearing her music is like floating through a sculpture exhibit."
