Round2 November/December 2002 The music of Round2 reflects an introspective look at modernity and life as a Canadian youth. As we know, the new sound for the new century is one of hope and optimism. The music of Round2 is just that: Warm, Hopeful, Optimistic and Fun. Stylistically, it is rooted in UK driven pop with strong rock and blues influences. Round2 is Dan Shaw, Paul Dymond, Michael Carabine and Grant Aldridge. Dan Shaw (Lead vocals and Rhythm Guitar) has both an unmistakable voice and stage presence. He is a self-taught musician and a brilliant songwriter. As the principle songwriter, Dan has often been referred to as the Heart of the band. His lyrics are the voice of the new generation. He has starred in the Musicals; Grease, Guys and Dolls and made it to the final cut for the Toronto production of the hit Broadway musical Rent. Dan’s “grin” is his post-show moniker he knows he has you! Paul Dymond (Second Lead Vocals, Bass and Keys) represents the second half of the songwriting team, and the Soul of the band. Paul’s lyrics are grittier; his songs represent a darker, tenderer view of life. His voice has a harder edge that captivates an audience on a different level than Dan’s. Paul is a self-taught Bass guitarist and more recently has added Keys to the music of Round2. If you can say anything about Paul he is the quiet one: always watching, wondering and analyzing. Michael Carabine (Lead Guitar, Backup Vocals) is a “classic sideman” and a “definitive third voice.” He is one of the most talented guitarists to come out of Toronto. His guitar arrangements and added texture provide the hooks for the music of Round2. More recently, Michael completed his B.A. in Fine Arts from York University’s Jazz Program where he was awarded the prestigious Oscar Peterson Jazz Bursary in 2001. One phrase that captures the essence of Michael is, “in your face enthusiasm.” Pure energy radiates off of his natural rock n roll demeanor. Grant Aldridge (Percussion) was encouraged from an early age to play a variety of instruments including guitar, bass, piano and the flute. He had just picked up the drums before joining Round2. The unique arrangements that give Round2 their sound can be attributed to Grant’s distinctive beat. He is a pillar of consistency and reliability. Grant’s enthusiasm provides the backbone for Round2. The adventure began in 1992 at St Michael’s College, the high school where Dan, Paul, Mike and Grant met and at once formed a unique bond that is still true today. Although they never played as a group in high school, they were the best of friends throughout. Graduation came and for a time, each went their own way. Grant went to London, England; Paul and Mike went to York University to study music and Dan returned to Kingston to be closer to his family. Fast Forward to Summer ’99… While still in Kingston, Dan received a phone call from Paul, asking him if he had been writing music and whether or not he wanted to start a band. After a creative time in Kingston, Dan returned to Toronto with a guitar, a blue backpack and repertoire of his own music. Little did they know that the music Paul and Dan had come up with would become the lyrical foundation of a band yet to be formed. The songs were there but they needed a drummer. Enter Grant Aldridge. Grant, just back from the UK, had recently picked up the drums and was ready to jam. All that was needed was a lead guitarist. Hello Michael Carabine!!! Michael was still in school studying Jazz at York when Paul asked him to jam with his old mates. Four months later they were playing live and going by the name of T.B.A. (To Be Announced). The name Round2 came to be when the band all realized that this was the first time in about three years that they had consistently been spending time together in the same city and felt that this was a second coming of sorts and hence Round2 was born.
