Three Sides of Lariviere
Marc D. Lariviere is opening up the dam and letting the music spill out. The lowkey singer-songwriter is issuing three CDs of his songs in one outpour, rather than spilling them out one at a time.
"It's 15 years worth of material, all put together in the last three years," says Lariviere, who recently released the CDs. Big Wheels, Thin Green Lines and Watching the Ships Come In are the first of a collection Lariviere calls the Vagran River Project.
Vagran is a Sanskrit word with two meanings, lightining and diamonds.
"Lightning is the inspirational idea that hits you, and diamond is the way you hone it down into a song," says Lariviere.
Inspiration for the project hit during a time he was living in the North Okanagan back country on a ranch.
"I just got inspired to get my thoughts down, getting all my lyrics together with a concept to bind them together."
A big wheel started the project rolling. "I was camping out near a native medicine wheel," he remembers. It was a time of healing and the First Nations woman who councelled him mentioned no one had written a song about the medicine wheel. It became the driving
force behind his first CD, Big Wheel.
