Artist description
Makeshift Grey is not just another hard working
band from a small town hoping to get realized.
They play music that they love to create,
and someday they would like to create
music that people all over the world could
enjoy just as locals do now. This band is very
driven and will stop at nothing to carry out what
it is they are trying to acheive...that is their
VISION. |

Makeshift Grey Review
'The Oakland Demo' 3 songs
Makeshift is a hard-working band Alternative Metal band from Modesto, Ca that formed in 1999. When first popping in 'The Oakland Demo' you get hit with the opening riff of 'Silver Tongue' that grabs you in. Makeshift Grey's vocalist, Guy Johnson, displays a mystic vocal style, reminiscent of Maynard of Tool. Johnson throws in the occasional scratchy screams which aren't too deep, yet get the power going. Their sound is pretty straight-forward good rock with an edge. There is a diverse beginning in the song 'Visions', which features a tribal/indie groove that leads to a strong verse/bridge. Guitarist, Matt Hayes, features a display of quiet/loud dynamics which definitely is one of the Makeshift Grey's strong points. '1000 Yard Stare', the 3rd and final song on the CD was definitely the song with the greatest hook on the CD. It has a powerful, basic drive, that grooves entirely. Drummer, Josh Garcia, and bassist, Steve Beasley, help keep a pungent pace and give the song a partial 'nu-metal' feel. With some patience and time to grow, Makeshift could incorporate each member's strong points and development an original sound all their own. I wouldn't be surprised to see Makeshift Grey getting people off their feet and jumping around when they play live. This band can benefit from a release of a full length LP that could display their full potential. I can see Makeshift Grey obtaining the ability to gain a large fan base locally and getting a chance to spread nationally with a few minor adjustments.
