Artist History
Founded by Rena Jones in the summer of 2001. Akasha began as an acoustic duo with Sitar (John Arns) and strings (Rena). John and Rena had performed a few small local gigs in San Francisco with guest artists on Tabla and Bulgarian Vocals. By August Rena had met Alex Theory and the band Akasha was born. Within 6 weeks Akasha had grown to a quartet with Jory Cunningham on upright bass, John Arns on sitar, Alex Theory on lap top and Rena Jones on violin, cello, vocals and clarinet. After the first gig at the Noodle Factory in Oakland, John Arns moved on to a more classical direction and is now performing all traditional music of India. The band remained as a trio for 3 more months until Lynda Arnold joined the band adding vocals, keys, and flute to the already dynamic and melodic electronic band.
Soon Akasha was gigging locally on a regular basis, playing at local outdoor events and underground electronic parties in the bay area.
Akasha was considered to be a very unique band with influences of Jazz, Downtempo, Eastern World, and Drum N' Bass. The band consisted of 3 lap tops, Alex Theory on loops, Jory Cunningham on 5 string electric upright bass, electric bass, and soft synths, Lynda Arnold on flute, keys, and vocals, and Rena Jones on violin, cello, vocals, and clarinet.
The band is no longer performing together in this format, but a new birth of this sound is being put together again by Rena Jones, and Jory Cunningham. |
