Artist History
Formed in September 1999 in Bangalore, Aatma was created out of the need of the founder members to create frequencies that were entirely their own. With the experience that the members of the band have put in other bands over the years, Aatma aim to create a sonic smorgasbord that is both emotionally extreme and technically dazzling at times. Relying on experience and influences that range from blues and jazz to prog rock, metal and traditional hard rock, Aatma have over 12 original compositions to call their own.
Influenced by the likes of Maiden, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Primus, Motorhead, Rolling Stones, Miles Davis, Slayer and Sepultura, the band's music is laced with jazzy interludes on solid funk platforms to prog rock breaks and wailing bluesy leads on typical metal riffs. Aatma’s compositions attempt to transcend from the ethereal to the psychedelic. The band is also delving into the relatively unexplored world of Sanskrit rock, blending alaaps and ragas with power chords, pumping basslines and precision drumming- a far cry from the spaced out sound that they currently comply with.
The gigs they've done so far include the Richmond Park Revival Concert, The GAIA concert at Guru Nanak Bhavan, The launch for Soundbuzz.com at the Club, Gigs at Planet M, Destination Chennai in Chennai, Sunday Jams all over the place and corporate gigs all over the city in their alter ego band Ashtray.
Composition duties are handled by Sandeep and Niranjan while Lyrics are written by Sandeep. A three song demo is currently doing the rounds in Bangalore while the band searches for that elusive record deal |
