Artist History
it's always been about us. i could be cliche' and say that it's always been about the music, and it's always been about the driving force that pushes us and all that nonsense that would come with your typical rock band biography. however, it wouldn't be true it's always been about us. it's always been about four kids, coming together, as friends, and as bandmates, and just playing honest music that they really enjoy. it's always been about us four in a dirty basement, getting sweaty, and feeding off each other. it's been a rather short lived adventure, if you really think about it time-wise, but, for us it's seems like forever.
we started in the summer of 1999..it was matt, jay, mike, dave, and myself. we were still trying to break away from our old bands..that were to say the least, fun..but, not really what we were looking for. so, we started all in a day. it was fun, we played a few shows, we got rid of guitarists, and picked up others. eventually, we cut a demo at clearcut studios in the summer of 2000, and it basically went nowhere, just as we had expected. we weren't really a full band. i mean, we had all the basics, five kids, who knew their instruments..we had the simple formula of play music, practice, repeat. some people enjoyed the demo, and i couldn't care less. i don't think any of us really cared if people said we were good or bad. we weren't really having fun, and it was pretty obvious to us. what we deicided to do was break away from the all in a day mold, and just start fresh..new name, new band, and new members. so, we played our final show sometime around the fall, where we supposedley, "set fire to churches, killed babies, ate feces, and beat up elderly women." so yeah, it wasn't successful.
matt, jay, mike, and myself started the oval portrait in the fall of 2000, and we were ready to do some new songs and go back to the studio and record, and maybe a mini tour or something of that nature. i was really getting fed up by this time. the music was boring, and our practices were becoming a hassle to me. i quit about ten or twelve times, maybe even more. jay quit probably about the same amount of times. i really got to thinking, what is this all for? we're heading no where, this isn't like a "big band" we don't even have any sort of following. it seemed rather silly to get myself worked up about this band when it really didn't matter to me, and seemingly didn't matter to anyone else.
i guess we can fast forward to about mid winter 2001. the greatest thing to ever happen to us, well, did. his name is evan, and he is probably the saving grace of this little band. evan is what were missing. he joined the band as a second guitarist, and basically took things into his own hands. we have been practicing full time, and playing our hearts out. it's like this great feeling, we all can really feel it inside of us. it sounds sort of stupid to say things like that..but, it's really the truth. we practice in our sweat drenched dirty basement, and we just amaze ourselves. are we going to amaze anyone else? i could care less. this band is for the five members, and it's not for anyone else. if people want to join in with us, then they can..but, i'm as happy as i have ever been and i don't care if i am selfish, this is our fucking band.
