Artist description
Dancing For Nickels has evolved a toothy, fragrant alt-rock sound with a glistening, swollen funk underbelly. Switching to a three-piece line-up (the band visibly shudders at the use of the term ‘power trio’) has opened up new avenues for the band to crawl into and violate. Joel Dawson’s fat bass tone, heaving bosom and muscular facial expressions combine with Joe Howes’ writhing finger-dancing and solid pants to paint a disturbing picture over the torrent of foul language that erupts from drummer Chuck Carr at the slightest provocation.
No. Not really. Joel’s got some fat bass tone, and the band does rock hard over a tight rhythm section, but there is very little writhing of any kind. And the only thing that erupts from Chuck is solid groove. With close to eight years playing together, and thirteen years of friendship, Dancing For Nickels is as tight as Steve Tyler’s pants, on or off the stage. Musically, DFN boldly shows where its influences lie: Incubus, Primus, Rush, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and I Mother Earth.

Artist History
Dancing For Nickels
Established in 1995 in Flesherton, Ontario (Gateway to the Beaver Valley) by four tenth-grade music students, DFN was originally called Southpaw. Four years later, they realized that both their name and one of their guitar players were not working out. They formed a three-piece band under a different name and changed their focus from the sleepy, idyllic local music scene to the bustling metropolis of Owen Sound, Ontario.
A favoured act in the local bar scene, DFN always draws a crowd. Lately, the band has been expanding its horizons by playing around the Toronto and Barrie areas at indie nights and competitions.
