Artist description
Paper Moon is a pop band from Winnipeg, Canada. ONE THOUSAND REASONS TO STAY...ONE REASON TO LEAVE is the group’s debut full-length. Released in Canada on Endearing Records in June 2002,the record hit #5 on the National Campus Radio Charts and collected accolades from press across the country and around the world. Described as “a perfect dose of perfect pop,”(London Scene),the songs on ONE THOUSAND REASONS TO STAY...are “short, sweet, and catchy as hell” (Exclaim Magazine). The album was released on Quince Records in Japan in July of 2002 with two bonus tracks and alternate artwork.
Balancing pop tendencies with a willingness to rock, Paper Moon have wowed fans with their dynamic live performances since their very first show — opening for Robert Schneider of the Apples in Stereo in May 2001. The band has toured the midwestern United States and across Canada, as well as playing shows at Prairie Music Week, Canadian Music Week, and the Halifax Pop Explosion. A review of their Montreal show praised the band as having a “most satisfying compound of sugary melodies, fine guitar textures, subtly new wave keys, smart lyrics and actual singing...this quartet could give lessons on what a pop song is” (Chart).
The musicians in Paper Moon have garnered plenty of attention for their past efforts. Created a few months after the amicable dissolution of the critically-acclaimed Winnipeg pop group B’ehl, Allison Shevernoha and Chris Hiebert (also ex-The Bonaduces) recruited Vancouverite Heather Campbell (ex-The Electrosonics and Bossanova) to form Paper Moon. Rob Rodgers (A Day In August) joined the band in 2003 to replace original bassist Bob Somers.
B’ehl’s BRIGHT EYES cd earned a Critic’s Choice review in BILLBOARD MAGAZINE, spent time in the top 5 on the Canadian campus radio charts, and gathered positive reviews and fans world-wide. The group also released BRIGHT EYES on the Quattro label in Japan and had their music featured in several films and tv shows including DAWSON ’S CREEK. The Electrosonics had three cds on the American indie label Drive-In Records which gained similar favour during their tenure, racking up rave after rave from across the globe. The Bonaduces, with their high-energy stage shows and diverse recordings, reached top 10 in Canada and earned a nomination for Best Rock Album at the Prairie Music Awards in 1999.
The band is planning a tour of Western Canada in May 2003, including a show at New Music West, as well as a tour of the USA and eastern Canada in September 2003. |
