Artist History
"World of ova doin' $hit." That's what the W.O.O.D.$. acronym stands for. That's the W.O.O.D.$ mentality. Mr.Wood$ the rhyme virtuoso is on a mission... to spread wisdom, wit, and the signature W.O.O.D.$ improvisational flair.
Mr.Wood$ never writes down his rhymes. His gift for flow comes from within. To break it down, he has single-handedly added a new level of lyrical showmanship and stylistic dexterity to a game that has been twenty-five years in the making. Simply put Woods is this generation's call for a response.
"I want to put the fun back in hip hop. Mr.Wood$ is going to make you enjoy it again.
Everyone is talking murder this, and murder that. We have got to be smarter as a generation, my messages will be subliminal, within the music and hooks, I want to allow music lovers to scratch that cognitive itch as well. Even my album as a whole is conceptualized to play like a movie and evolve as you listen. Watch how I make them rant and rave, hoot and holla' and still school em' like the scholar that I am."
Reviving the original spirit of hip hop is not a goal he takes lightly. " I love the challenge. I am ready to take the world on represent for it, you just have to make hits, I am not going to pigeonhole myself into I am from here or I am from there though. I'd rather bring the rest of the world back to where I'm from..."
Reality based yet entertaining, and original this 24 year old lyricist from Far Rockaway, Queens, New York who is hardly a newcomer to hip hop brings his own raw stylus and grassroots upbringing to the game. His goal is to be the Ambassador of hip hop "I am an artist first and foremost, I don't just rap I make big songs"
As a youth, Woods listened to rap, hip hop, R&B, house, trance and his mother's West Indian music. By the time he hit puberty, he was ruling the dance floors at New York hot spots such as the Tunnel, Red Zone, Sound Factory, and Mars. He was known as Hollywood.
"When I was a dancer my name was Hollywood, but my friends called me Woods for short plus they didn't want me to get too 'Hollywood' on them. I mean how I'm gonna' go Hollywood pop locking and wind-milling, anyway once I started rapping I just kept Woods and added the acronym to represent the image of wanting to take everything to the next level."
Woods transplanted his discipline for dance and wordplay into an incredible lyrical flow; his dynamic personality took care of the rest. It would only be a matter of time before the Woods message was heard.
His break came when he penned the notorious response to TLC's 1999 hit single "No Scrubs." After hearing the rough cut, Funkmaster Flex suggested Woods team up with the Sporty Thieves. The single flew to number one on the billboard charts and stayed there for six weeks receiving gold status. He was featured in XXL magazine, and Billboard magazine. With the twist of the tongue, he had reinvented NYC's often imitated rarely duplicated slang-uage.
Woods, then could be heard as a voice over rapping on the 2000 Pepsi commercial featuring Master P. He followed that up in a regional radio spot for McDonald's advertising their dollar menu meal. Mr.Wood$ has also rocked crowds from New York, in such clubs as the Tunnel, Envy, and Club New Yorker to California on the FarmClub.com cable program. Musically he has evolved from an artist who does songs to an artist who has continuity within an album, while still making songs that individually will stand on their own.
Wood$ and partners started their own Outlandish Entertainment, to make a creative whirlwind that could effectively produce an album and marketing campaign that makes you scratch that "cognitive itch" we all have inside. Outlandish is fast becoming a force in entertainment, with a formula that is home grown, and no holds barred. At present Wood$ is working to complete his solo debut which will make you conjure up every emotion you have inside from beginning to end as he conquers every obstacle and has fun doing it. It is a 'family business', and family, unity, and respect are the pillars of his mantra.
"He's been working hard, tremendously hard, from the beginning," says his mother.
"and he's always had a flair for entertaining. This is his dream and he's overcome a lot of obstacles along the way. He said to me, 'Mom, someday me and my friends are going to be famous. One day we'll be on TV' I said, ' boy, I'm gonna be right there with you.'"
