Artist History
These fine folk performers have been exciting West Coast audiences with their unique blend of traditional and contemporary folk music and song since 1995. Due to their diverse cultural backgrounds and musical interests, Kitangus' music comes out unique. In the face of traditional purists and many Celtic cultural biases, Gareth Hurwood, co-founder and leader-of-the-band (!) coined his own term for their music - "WEST COAST CELTIC." as a reflection of the influences that this lore has gone through in space and time and adaptation to survive and evolve all the way from the Celtic fringes of Western Europe in centuries past to the edge of the New World in the 21st century. On Vancouver Island, Kitangus has delivered enthused, powerful performances at the world famous Buchart Gardens Ltd., historic Craigdarroch Castle, U-Vic. Centre Auditorium, Sidney-By-The-Sea, and many a folk club and public house in between! From the concert stage to your local pub, this is a band that shares a passion for their music and the tradition from with it grows. Kitangus is always delighted to take an audience along with them.
