Artist History
What do you call three musicians with an addiction to Elvis Presley, lounge music, 50's retro-rock and Chinese buffets? Probably crazy, but the Dayton, Ohio based rock n’ roll trio TCB Hit Squad prefers to play an original mix of surf-rock, 70's lounge, 50's retro-roots rock, punk rock & Southern rock all smashed together. And TCB, or Taking Care of Business for the layperson, is just what this unit of Dayton music scene veterans does with their original blend of moody and melodic rock. Says The Artist Formerly Known As Natty: "I combined Elvis' "Takin' Care Of Business in a Flash" motto with the title of an old Deadbolt album, Tijuana Hit Squad, and TCB Hit Squad was born."
Formed in December 2000 from the ashes of the Dayton based ambient surf-space rock band Escape Velocity, TC Lounge a.k.a. Tom Gilliam (guitar/drums/vocals) and Gavin Gunn a.k.a. Gavin Spencer (guitar/drums/vocals) joined up with expert ax player The Artist Formerly Known As Natty a.k.a. Brian Gilliam (brother to Tom; lead guitar/bass/vocals) to take surf rock to the next level.
The "no holds barred" trio released their critically acclaimed debut surf rock CD, Beware of the Monkey in March 2001. The band played shows in Ohio from March 2001-September 2001 before disbanding in October 2001 to pursue other projects.
In early 2003, TCB Hit Squad reunited with a goal to reinvent their sound & write/record the follow-up to their 2001 debut CD Beware of the Monkey. The original TCB Hit Squad lineup remains intact. The new songs will be rock n’ roll with more vocals & less instrumentals while retaining an old-school sound. Says The Artist Formerly Known As Natty: "Toss Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, and Dinosaur Jr. into a blender and the mixture is the closest you're going to get to describing our new sound." On October 2, 2003, TCB Hit Squad returned to El Diablo Lounge in Dayton (site of the CD Release party for their debut CD, Beware Of The Monkey) to play their first live show since breaking up in October 2001.
TCB Hit Squad enjoys regular radio play on WYSO Public Radio (Rev. Cool‘s Around The Fringe Show), WXEG Alternative Rock and the #1 surf-rock radio station in the world KFJC, headed by the legendary Phil Dirt out of Santa Cruz, California. The Hit Squad is also a formidable force on mp3.com, charting consistently on top of the Dayton charts and comfortably in the world surf-rock charts.
