"Sapfhier-Trollskogen"
It has become evident to me that when describing black metal, comparisons are the easiest way to explain an artist's style. Therefore, I will liken this SAPFHIER release to some similar artists' styles. When I first listened to Trollskogen, I was immediately brought back to the majestic and melodic days of DIMMU BORGIR's For All Tid and EMPEROR's In The Nightside Eclipse. Similar in many respects, I can easily hear a passion and devotion to the Scandinavian lands where the sole member of SAPFHIER hails from. Lord Aganaroth essentially is SAPFHIER as he produces uniquely pure atmospheric black metal through Trollskogen's excellent combination of blazing black metal songs and enchanting ambient tracks of genuine nordic purity.
A total of nine tracks provides Trollskogen an excellent platform to establish depth as majestic black metal. Three of the nine tracks are atmospheric ambient tracks with various sounds such as birds chirping and wolves howling, which, when mixed with the subtle keyboard effects, creates a very immersive nature-inspired mood. The remaining six songs thankfully do not discard the keyboard effects, but definitely stay true to black metal in the vein of older DARKTHRONE and GORGOROTH. So, if you ever wished to hear something such as DARKTHRONE mixed with early DIMMU BORGIR, I would definitely say this is an excellent choice.
While I am partial to the very atmospheric keyboards in this album, the blazing programmed drums and heavily distorted guitar work is very good. Regarding vocals, I am certain Lord Aganaroth needed a cough drop after recording them, because they are definitely grim and evil sounding. As mentioned before, it may sound like old-school black metal at times, but it definitely does not sacrifice good production. I am of the opinion that this is one of the reasons the overall majestic sound is achieved. I do not think it could have been done if the production/quality was deliberately lowered in order to sound "true" or whatever.
This is a very good album which I highly praise. |
