Artist History
'This is a monster!'
These were the words of one listener after the
music of KLÄGG had roared through his living room
for the first time.
And indeed he was right!
Comprising members of various Vancouver musical
outfits, KLÄGG was born in a laboratory in South
Burnaby, British Columbia. Limbs and organs of a
range of musical styles including punk, hard rock,
psychedelia and blues were stitched together in a
basement at the end of a quiet street. The result
was a rough rock n roll beast, a musical
Frankenstein's monster built from throbbing bass
lines, crunching riffs, anthemic choruses,
brooding melodies, and whatever else was in the
room at the time.
KLÄGG's first album, 'Umlauts and Ottomen', was
released in late 1999 after over a year's worth of
steady jamming, writing and recording. The album
spawned the underground hit 'Skytrain Surfin' and
the band found itself with an unexpected cult
following. The monster was out of the basement.
In the summer of 2000, KLÄGG made it's first live
appearance, storming the stage at Vancouver's
Cottage Bistro to surprise a packed room of sundry
onlookers. Local uber-bassist Smash was added to
the live lineup, leaving KLÄGG's regular bassman,
JR Muc, free to seize the mic and roam the crowd. The band had climbed from the basement to the stage, laying down the prototype for a crazy but commanding old school rawk show.
Pressed for more by its core of disciples, KLÄGG
returned to its basement laboratory and began
jamming up the raw materials for a second release.
The band recorded 'This is KLÄGG' in the first
half of 2001, and launched the album in August
with a show at Vancouver’s DV8. KLÄGG prowled the
stylish nightspot like the Bride of Frankenstein
on a Paris catwalk.
The response to the new record has furthered the
band's anti-hero status. 'It's one of the best
albums of the year!', declared Shockk, guitarist
for jazzrock gurus Roadbed and a lynchpin of the
local music scene.
And so the monster grows. Unsure of what they've
created, the three mad scientists of KLÄGG -
The Mule, JR Muc and Alec Macaulay - are following
their brainchild as it makes its way into the
world. Become a mad scientist yourself, make
yourself part of the ever evolving KLÄGG saga.
Is the world ready for KLÄGG? Indeed, is KLÄGG
ready for the world?
