    Artist History
Only months ago the 6 piece alternative rock act 'Gher' were unknown hopefuls in their small town base of Dubbo in the cenral west of N.S.W. Australia. Today, this high energy act with it's brooding music and impacting message have a solid fanbase throughout the country and around the world. In June 2001, the current Gher lineup of Peter Hutchison (vocals), Allyn Smith (guitar and vocals), Joshua Morse (guitar), Andrew Rugendyke (drums), Jason Root (guitar) and Joshua Hatton (bass) hit A# Sharp Studios in Sydney to record their debut single "Don't Walk Away". This independant release received local airplay immediately as well as incredible support on the internet, becoming the number one altenative and rock song at mp3.com.au. Furthermore it went on to become the number 1 hard rock song in the world at iuma.com. The lineup performed publicly for the first time in July 2001 supporting Alabaster Box in Dubbo. This performance proved to be a big success for Gher and reinforced what we had already discovered from 'Don't Walk Away' - Gher is a quality act. Word travelled from Dubbo throughout the state to such an extent that by the time Gher first performed outside Dubbo at Black Stump in Appin that September, the venue was packed to overflowing. In the meantime, Gher quietly released their entire debut album on the internet which climbed the iuma charts so quickly it was the most downloaded album in the world at their site on the 24/09/01. As a consequence Gher received headlines and news stories across the country. The C.D was released independantly in October and the initial shipment of C.D's was depleted within days. In it's first month of release and without any external distribution, Gher was the #10 selling independant christian album in Australia. Amongst the numerous concerts Gher had by now performed, their local crowd were to get behind them at an event that Gher, along with the Dubbo Community Church put on called 'Live in the Shed'. This was an important event for the band as it was their endeavour to get talent out to the country areas for Dubbo's young people. Youth groups and individuals travelled from towns miles away to come and see Gher who were ably supported by Never Pay Retail, Oracle and Ground Effect. The success continued for Gher throughout December. Being recognised as the best band in the central west, they were to play alongside Bardot and Crash Palace live across Australia and New Zealand on Channel V. Within months of recording and releasing their debut release independantly, Gher have already played to crowds from Dubbo to Sydney, from Wollongong to Lismore. They have fan bases all over the state and even internationally in Canada and the U.S via the internet. To date over 60000 Gher songs have been downloaded on the internet. They have been on news stories across the country and played live across Australia and New Zealand. Their tracks are being played in regular rotation on numerous radio stations across the country from Wagga to Queensland. This all makes for an incredible achievement in such a short time, for a group from the bush doing it on their own. Mind you, this is just the beginning from Gher - they're due to hit the studio again this year with what promises to be their best material yet.
