FIRST VERSION
BIO
First Version was born during the summer of ’97.
At first, the group had only two members. Turi Starman on vocals and GF on guitars. They played with a drum machine. They created a unique sound that could be described as industrial Glam metal.
After a couple of weeks of practice, GF and Turi decided to get a bass player to help improve their sound.
They recruited Dragonis.
They wrote more songs with more complicated melodies. Because of that, Dragonis took on the role of second guitar while Dolly took his place on bass.
During the winter of ’98, First Version realised that they needed a drummer. Martin, a friend of Dragonis, was welcomed to the band as their first drummer.
They practised at the Base Bin for a few months.
First Version played it’s first show on March 3rd 2000 at the L’X on Ste-Catherine street in Montreal.
The crowd response was very good.
In February 2000, First Version entered the studio to record their first demo album: Dead Calm.
The demo was engineered by Yves Berube and produced by First Version
The bands visual look slowly started to take form during their second show at the Sonic club in Saint-Jean on August 2nd.
During the show, they placed a television set on the stage that played a video that got a mix response because of it’s controversial content.
A reviewer for the Montreal based magazine “Sans Frais”, gave the show an 8 on 10.
Their next show was again at the L’X with a band called “More than Mayo” on December 2nd 2000. Again, the show got a great response.
It was Martins last Show with the group. GF took his place while they searched for a new drummer.
They then played the Petit Cafe Campus on 14/04/01
Next stop was the Cafe Chaos on 20/08/01
First Version decided that it was time to re-enter the studio to record another demo, being unsatisfied with the first.
Jesus-Christ and Swastikas was recorded at the Studios Nicko at Saint-Jean. It was engineered by Luc Boivin. Produced and mixed by Luc Boivin and First Version.
Funded by Louis Bossa.
To celebrate their new recordings, the group booked the Petit Cafe Campus for their launch.
The cover of the CD stirred controversy in Montreal.
Soon after, Dolly left First Version after 2 and a half years with the group.
Now, the formation had to find a new drummer and bass player. They auditioned many candidates without results.
When they thought everything to be lost, Dragonis brought Shayne to a practice to audition for drums.
He was exactly what they were looking for. Now, only a bass player was needed.
Just when the mood changed to a more positive vibe, Dragonis left First Version to persue another dream.
GF (guitars) Turi (Vocals) and Shayne (Drums), asked for the help of one of their friends Kevin to help them out on bass for their show at Les Fouffes with DOOK. He accepted.
In late September, the band was interviewed for the first time. It was on the late night radio show with Danko.
On October 1st 2001, First Version brought down the house at Les Fouffes. The show was a great success.
Shortly after, the group signed with Local Distribution to distribute Jesus-Christ and Swastikas all over Quebec.
Kevin was thanked for his services with the band.
Shortly after, Justin became First Version’s second official bass player.
With the band now complete, they wrote new songs and played at the rainbow room for the show Bash for Ca$h on November 24th 2001. First Version won First place after a great performance. They then played the next Saturday at the Vieux Saint Jean in St-J. With Dook.
On January 19th 2002, First Version played the Petit Cafe Campus with Insurgent.
On January 25Th 2002, First Version played at the Mouton Noir in Grand-Mere with Dook and Ancestral Curse. The show was a great success. The crowd response was excellent.
First Version will enter the studio in January 2002 to record their album: The Ape Revolution.
