ORIGIONALLY PUBLISHED IN "THE DISTRICT" NEWS PAPER: It's a family affair. Cho Young and the Davenports "Greatest Hits Vol. 5" A review By Jill Spears and Clay Achee Take a misunderstood Chinese singer, blend him into a rural-Georgia Family band a nd what have you? Cho Young and the Davenports, of course. This band’s unique approach to music and performance has landed the group a place in the local music spot-light. With the recent release of the album “Greatest Hits Vol. 5,” no one can escape the omnipresent Cho and his Davenport backups. To understand hand fully appreciate the “Greatest Hits,” one must delve into the band’s vivid history. Young, who was born in China but raised in the US, came from a strong musical background. He cited his influences as his grandfather’s polka band and his father. “my father was a pipa player, which is a traditional Chinese instrument,” said Young. Young individually released several albums, which include the overlooked “Let Me Be The Captain of Your Heart.” Young struggled through the mid-90s with a rough solo career that brought him little success. “I had a lot to say but critics didn’t understand.” Young’s career needed a jump-start. Enter the Davenports. A small-time band consisting of cousins, brothers and the occasional sister, the Davenports instantly attracted Young, who felt inspired by their origional sound. The Davenports began their career playing barn dances and high school cafeterias. “They bring the love of music straight to the country people,” Young said. Members of the Davenport family include Matt on guitar, Roc on keyboards, trombone enthusiast Belinda and Yo-Yo tricksters Justin and Eric. The extremely different styles of Young and the Davenports merge exquisitely, which is readily apparent on “Greatest Hits.” Young referred to the album’s music as “rockin’ soul,” while Adam Davenport described it as “a combination of beatnik and punk,” which he collectively calls “rastabileatnick.” Adam plays a variety of instruments, including the mini-accordion, bird callers and the piano-a-saurus. “I fill in the gaps in the music,” said Adam. “Greatest Hits,” an album that defies comparison, is the result of this odd assortment of musicians. The 14-track album begins with the poppy but deep “Gals Headed Beetle Boy’ and continues with the brooding “My Pancreas (ran away from me).” “Pez” is an introspective look at the possibility of living as a Pez dispenser. Young explained that the song “Lord of the Flies” is based on imagery from the novel. “The song describes what it would be like to be a pig’s head,” said Young. “Powerful, seductive, bloody.” Young’s favorite track on the album is “Improv Song.” “It is a recorded jam session,” he said. “I listened to the music and made up the lyrics as I went along. We recorded four different sets of lyrics and mixed them into one track.” “Urination Festival,” another album gem, was inspired by a friend. “He had a problem urinating,” explained Young. “I asked myself, ‘What could help this guy pee?’” Another memorable song is “Sean Connery (lives in my closet).” It is a conceptual piece regarding Young’s ponderings during a trip to his closet. The last song featured on the album, titled “The Last Song of the Album” is an epic masterpiece reaching almost 10 minutes in length and covers a wide range of topics. So what makes CY and the Ds such a well-known entity in the local arena? “Adam’s brilliance and the way he plays with his whistle,” remarked Scott Davenport, guitarist. Young responded, “I don’t thing we’re popular. More like infamous.” Despite Young’s view, the band does have a cult-like following. Scott enjoys the groupies. “It’s nice,” he said. “Adam has a lot of groupies.” When asked about them, Adam stated that he hasn’t been “personally attacked.” He continued, “Maybe that’s because I usually cut out early after shows. I’ve heard of some incidents, though.” Young added that Scott is the “Sex pot of the band.” Duke Davenport, however, thought otherwise. “I like th Duke groupies better! The Cho groupies are really annoying!” That family-fun idea is transmitted into each track of “Greatest Hits Vol. 5” The album is yet another fine accomplishment for Cho Young and the Davenports and full of all the with and tongue-in-cheek humor one can handle.
