Artist History
Born to Scots parents in Lusaka, Zambia, Robin's early career was based in Cape Town with his band Z-Astaire during the wave of South African pop that happened in the 80's. His songwriting influenced by the Beatles, Costello and Bowie and his guitar playing by Jeff Beck, Ry Cooder, Skunk Baxter and Hendrix, he racked up back to back hits with producer Kevin Shirley and performed to large crowds nationwide during that time.
His "surfer-boy" image, which was pushed by the record company, was based on the fact that, unlike the Beach Boys, he did actually surf competitively and represented Western Province for 4 years.
While this was a high profile period for Robin, his dissatisfaction with the way he was promoted and with the S.A. music industry in general led to his departure to the U.K. in 1986. Since then he has been working alternately in South Africa and the U.K., with stints in New York and Germany, exploring other musical forms in his songwriting such as mbaqanqa, Celtic and country blues. His songs, although still with an eye for a pop tune, now reflect his increasing influence by American artists Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie as well as African artists like Philip Tabane and Salif Keita.
In the U.K. he has been performing primarily as a solo acoustic artist on the folk circuit, performing at small venues as well as events like the Cambridge folk festival. He has also played extensively with his band, Kook, on the London circuit. In South Africa his solo performances at events like Womad 99 and Splashy Fen have won him new fans and changed the perceptions of the older ones.
He is currently promoting his new album "Iron in the Sky" in SA, the States and the UK.
Based at Kommetjie in Cape Town, he indulges his passion for his family, surfing and the sea inbetween gigs and tours.
