    Artist description
Mango Pirates is an asian american alternative rock band from Los Angeles. Since coming together at UCLA in the mid-90s, Mango Pirates have found themselves on a steady track to success, due in part to their reputation for highly charged live performances, as well as multiple appearances on AsianAvenue.com’s widely distributed Plugged In compilation series. Emerging discretely from LA’s alternative rock scene, their presence has offered something positive and refreshing to a music genre not generally associated with the R&B-prone Asian American artists of today. Unity MusicWorks has just recently released the Mango Pirates debut album "GARAGE SURF". Every track on Garage Surf was written and produced by Mango Pirates, who collectively cite such musically diverse inspirations as Third Eye Blind, Billy Joel, Tonic, Cake, Jimi Hendrix, Metallica, and sSesame Street. “Follow us in our sonic misadventures,” say Mango Pirates, “and let us take you on an addictive trip through love, loneliness, rainstorms, paranoia, angst, aliens, and jack-o-lanterns. You just might find yourself beside a fellow fan yelling, ‘Taste the Mango!’”
    Artist History
Once upon a time, in a land far far away, an evil sorcerer wanted to control the soul of a very special man. Only this man had the power to destroy the sorcerer, but the man's destiny was to be continuously reincarnated and fall in love with an immortal goddess of unending beauty. The evil sorcerer, who wanted the goddess to himself, worked spells of enormous power to thwart the man, and in doing so, these spells changed the course of history as we know it. During one of his many lives, the man met a bard. That was Doug. Doug played Pilipino folk songs with the rondalla, but he also wrote his own music. Mostly sappy love songs. Anyway, Doug met a minstrel by the name of Vernon at the academy, and Vernon also played guitar, and wrote his own songs. Vernon wanted to start a band, and Doug wanted to too, so they walked awhile and saw Joe the alchemist sitting by the inverted fountain. Joe played guitar too, plus he could play drums pretty well. Joe was in. Then they walked some more and saw the enchantress Lynette at the food court. Lynette played drums and bass too. Woo hoo! There they were, the four of them, the beginnings of the Mango Pirates. So they started practicing at a cathedral near the town square, and they had the greatest time playing music. They practiced for a festival that was coming up, and they practiced hard. At that time, they chose the name Born Yesterday, because they were so new. They sang covers, and original songs, mostly alternative. Lynette played bass and drums. Doug and Joe played drums, bass, and guitar. And Vernon just stuck to his guitar (like a devoted boyfriend.) The festival was a hit! They soon played at a wedding. They then changed their name to Mango Pirates. Then they lost Joe. Joe had to leave the band because he moved far far away. That's when Dwayne the rogue stepped in. But Dwayne was untamed and wild. He would go crazy breaking things and just being a fun guy. He played whatever instrument was in front of him. He wrote good songs too. Although he wouldn't wear a dress, the new Mangoes rocked the house, and the patio, and the neighbors enough that they called the police... more than once... As they were getting better, the Mango were hit by gig after gig after gig. All of a sudden, there were gigs coming out their ears. No rest, and constant performing was fun, but rest was surely earned. By now Mango had a full repertoire, and a regular gig at a local club. Then they lost Lynette. Lynette moved on to a better life with a great job and another band, and soonafter a loving husband and child. Lynette, they miss you! As a trio, Mango's style changed, but they still rocked the house, and the patio, and the gym, even though the mics sucked. Man, mics sure seem to suck at a lot of places. Anyway, I digress... The new Mango trio yearned for a fourth. Emerson the wanderer magically appeared and answered the Mango's prayers. Woo hoo! Again! Emerson played the meanest, funkiest drums. Once again, the Mango was whole. They even incorporated keyboards, along with the drum, bass, guitar sound to give them the fullness they never had. They practiced good and hard, and had their best concert ever, jumping up and down and screaming, throwing candy, and feeling on top of the world. Whilst consuming clown made hamburgers they lost Dwayne. Dwayne loved the musician's life, but decided to concentrate on kung fu and school. A trio once again, the Mango continued to bring original and un-original music to the masses while searching for an additional member. A lovely voice answered their calls during one of their journeys. It was the fair pixie Melisa. Together, they forged ahead, gaining strength and fans and spreading the sounds. They even landed in Gardena to immortalize 13 lucky tunes recording their debut album "GARAGE SURF." Fate and destiny struck again when Melisa left the Mango quest for one of her own. Good luck Melisa. Emerson the skin basher, Vernon the string tickler, and Doug the pluckslapper scoured the countryside for a voice to match the uncanny Mango style. They wandered many a cobbled street, and met many a vocal dynamisist, but none of their feet fit in the glass shoe (which was really made of coconuts.) Almost losing hope, an Angel came and answered their prayers. The shoe fits, and boy can Angel sing!!! Join Angel, Emerson, Vernon, and Doug on their expedition mission of sound massaging and vociferous construction production and playing loud music.
