Artist History
My real name is Justin Jones. I have been interested in music since a very young age. I started to learn violin at 10 years old under instruction from my father. At 12, I started taking violin lessons from a private teacher. Since 6th grade, I played in the public school orchestra under my father’s direction and started to compete in solo competitions around Oklahoma, Kansas, and Arkansas. During high school, I attended Oklahoma Summer Arts institute at Quartz Mountain for 3 years in a row, played in All State Orchestra, and participated in various solo competitions in the Oklahoma area. I also began to work on writing music for the first time with a group of friends, eventually leading to the formation of Lyle Zaring’s Monkey Death Grip Band, later to be known as The Subterraneans. We stayed together thru High School and eventually released a pressed album on CD, Strange no Stranger. The music was mostly folk-rockish, but has a unique sound since the music was written by 3 different songwriters. For more information or samples of The Subterraneans, click here.
After high school, I began working on a degree in Electrical Engineering at Oklahoma State University here in Stillwater. I became interested in writing electronic music my freshman year after getting a new computer. I created a couple of tracks on the computer while experimenting with a basic midi sequencer, and after doing some research into available equipment, I became fascinated with the world of electronic instruments and experimental music. Eventually I met some other kindred spirits of experimental music, who I have worked with quite a bit. Techix has been a side project of tracks I have written, mostly using violin melodies I created and then adding ambient and rhythmic elements to complete them.
These interests have led me to focus in my studies of Electrical Engineering on the actual workings of electronic instruments, digital signal processing, sound synthesis, and music electronics. After graduation, I plan to find a job where I can combine my skills as both a classical and experimental musician to design electronic instruments and equipment that can function seamlessly with the musicians who use them. Too many good efforts in creating electronic instruments fail because the engineers that build them cannot understand what the musicians require the instruments to be able to do. After graduation, I plan to work on music much more aggressively and attempt to distribute and promote my music, as well as seek out other artists to collaborate with. |
