A native of the Erie, PA area John graduated from Crawford Technical School in 1975 and soon built his first synthesizer. He worked in various progressive, experimental and new wave groups before relocating to Nashville, TN in 1987. Shortly thereafter John began working with several well known musicians in the Nashville alternative music scene. The most notable of these collaborations was Element 115 with Mike Griffith, Chris Tench and Giles Reaves. John's technical background is extensive. For ten year s he held the position of Technical Director at Sixteenth Avenue Sound, a world-class recording studio on Music Row in Nashville, TN. During this time he worked with many well known artists such as Stevie Wonder, Steve Winwood, Ziggy Marley, Mark Knopfler, Bon Jovi, Queensryche, Amy Grant, Jars Of Clay, and many others. While at Sixteenth Avenue Sound John also attended a Solid State Logic training course in Begbroke England. While in the U.K. he visited several studios including Abbey Road, George Mar t in's AIR Studios and Real World, where he met Peter Gabriel. After Sixteenth Avenue Sound, John opened Antarctica Studios with his wife Brenda. Antarctica featured a high-end ProTools recording studio, CD mastering suite, graphic & web design departmen t, digital art gallery and an online independent label. Press Reviews
From the November, 1988 issue of Keyboard magazine, by Titus Levi: "Every piece I do has a different approach to sound, rhythm, and other musical elements," John Trevethan observes. "That's why my music is experimental." Whatever it is, it's fun. Treveth an's style slides between rhythmically forceful new age, hip-churning techno-pop with an elusive funky edge, and dreamy electro-chant music with strong third-world overtones. It's sexy, heady, sensual, seductive, sweaty, uplifting, and refreshing. The textures are clear, though not oversimplified or mundane. The melodies are airy, but not forgettable. The rhythms can be fierce and effective, yet they're never rushed, because "I really try to think like a drummer. I go through the parts with my hands and feet to get a more human feel." A year ago Trevethan moved to Nashville to further his opportunities in the music business. He describes the scene there as lively for all types of music, especially original work. The fact that the city is smaller than Los Angeles or New York is also an asset, in his opinion, because it allows him to stand out from the pack more easily. He found a collaborator in Nashville too- his wife Brenda, a reed player. Even if he never lands a recording contract, Trevethan pla ns to continue with his music. He's released his own music before (with the Transmuters, on Crown Vetch Enterprises), and he's ready to do it again. "I play music because I love it," he explains. "I just want the music heard."
