    Artist description
Born and raised in Southern California, Marilyn Scott spent her early years absorbing and performing the soulful classics of Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Janis Joplin, Etta James and Sam Cooke, among others. From the time she was 15, she was performing in local clubs and school productions. She then moved to San Francisco to attend college on an art scholarship. Attending classes by day, she spent her nights performing in original and Top 40 bands throughout the Bay Area. One of her most enduring friendships during this time was with Emilio Castillo from Tower of Power, who hired her to do lead and backing vocals on the group's ground-breaking albums. Scott later moved back to L.A. where she became a valued addition to the studio and club scene, doing sessions and performing with the Yellowjackets, Hiroshima, Etta James, Bobby Womack, Brian Auger, Spyro Gyra and George Duke. Prior to this, Scott also had the distinction of being the only white female cast member to tour in the Martin Luther King musical Selma. A solo recording career evolved naturally out of Scott's extensive back up resumé. Her first solo venture was the single "God Only Knows," which hit the Billboard Top 100 and led to her first album, Dreams of Tomorrow. Her second album, Without Warning, was produced by Michael Sembellow, and on the strength of its singles, "Only You" and "10 X 10," the album established Scott as a critics' favorite. The Gavin Report industry publication described her next field of endeavor best: " Marilyn Scott is fast becoming the queen of soundtracks." Her distinctive vocal stylings can be heard on the soundtrack for Harvey Fierstein's Torch Song Trilogy with a crystal-clear version of the Johnny Mercer/Hoagy Carmichael classic "Skylark." She was also featured with her rendition of "I Only Have Eyes For You" on the soundtrack for the Arnold Schwarzenegger/Danny DeVito film Twins. She subsequently collaborated with Bobby Caldwell and his partner Henry Marx, who worked with Marilyn on her album Sky Dancing, which was a hit in Japan and led to a tour of the Far East with Caldwell. The release in late 1992 of Smile afforded Scott her greatest critical and commercial success to date. Led by a duet with Brenda Russell on "That Man On My Mind," and a magnificent cover of "You Don't Know Me," the album rose to the upper reaches of Billboard's Contemporary Jazz chart and received acclaim from Jazz Times as "a positive reminder of the musical potentialities of the contemporary fusion approach." Her heartrending performance of "You Don't Know Me" on The Arsenio Hall Show in 1993 is often considered one of the program's musical high points. Scott's Warner Bros. debut, Take Me With You, further established her as one of the top vocalists of the '90s and produced a top 10 track on R&R's NAC charts. On her sixth album release and second for Warner bros. Records, Avenues Of Love, Marilyn Scott takes her listeners on a tour of her musical neighborhood, which combines passionate performance with exquisite arrangements, all accented by Scott's artful interpretation. Scott continues to write, tour and make melodically captivating and extraordinarily romantic music wherever she goes.
