Artist description
LUX MAMMOTH consists of 2 members, Cat Hope and Dr Alien Smith. They both perform on various arrangements of bass guitar, samplers, electronic effects, computer and other hardware. Their music has been described as "...a bizarre swirl of distorted sub frequencies and bass noise. This duo uses the bass for a purpose it was never intended..." (Naomi Millet, THE WIRE, July 1999).
Formed initially for the Totally Huge New Music Fest 1999, Lux Mammoth have gone on to shock and surprise audiences with their live shows. Loud and uncompromising, the duo have performed using their traditional format of bass guitars and electronics but have also staged shows using various sound sources including meat and power tools.
Their debut CD Hertz Circus was released in late 2000. The CD itself has a much more intricate feel, compared to the bludgeoning live shows, but is no less innovative. 2001 looks to be huge for Lux Mammoth with the ElectroFringe Festival in October, hot on the heels of their 26 show US tour that took place in June.

....Cat Hope....
Cat Hope is based in Perth, and plays as a solo noise artist as well as composing for contemporary dance and film. Cat has had a varied and bizarre musical career; starting as a classical flautist and ending up in her current situation as a noise, rock and soundtrack composer performing on electric bass. Her inclusion on the Susan Lawly EXTREME MUSIC FROM WOMEN compilation early in 2000 led her to develop her solo bass noise performances and subsequently tour the USA. Cat has completed her first solo bass noise album FETISH on the Sound Gallery label, which after being sold out is about to be re-released on Bloodstar. Cat has also performed with HUGO RACE, STELLARC, JON ROSE, TONY BUCK, QUARTERED SHADOWS and ONCE UPON A TIME and has albums with her band GATA NEGRA as well as MICEVICE and HUGO RACE AND THE TRUE SPIRIT.
....DrAlienSmith....
As a recording engineer for over a decade, the Dr has been responible for recording the releases of Perth's most unique and extreme bands. The Bergerk! Studios was set up by the Dr in 1996 and still serves the underground of Perth's music scene today.
After forming and playing bass in weirdo rock band Swapmeat, the Dr started to explore the world of noise and sound art with 3 piece noise band KAK in 1998. Lux Mammoth came to fruition in 1999, combining the bass guitar and noise, the perfect outlet for his musical creativity.
2000 saw the launch of the Bergerk! Sound Gallery Label, releasing limited edition CD's of experimental artists from Australia and is the only label of it's kind on the West Coast.
