Artist History
When people think of the hot spots for hardcore music, they think L.A. or New York. They may even think Dallas or Detroit. But what they don’t think about is San Marcos. subject:defect hopes to change that.
subject:defect is a hardcore San Marcos band who has been playing live for about a year and a half. They’ve played gigs in San Marcos, Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, and Victoria. There are even plans in the making for them to play in Mexico.
To know the music is to know the band. Every member of the band has a deep passion for music. There’s an urge in this band to change the musical climate as it is today. In this case, change is good.
As of now, subject:defect has written fourteen fine-tuned songs. Each song goes a different direction. Listening to the songs you’ll hear sadness, anger, hope, love, or hate. You’ll also notice some definite attitude.
It all started when two friends decided to dedicate their life to music. Ryan Wortham(vox) and Patrick Cruise(bass) both lived in a small run-of-the-mill town in Texas called Plainview. The name pretty much describes the place. Jamming out to covers of Deftones, Pantera, and Metallica, they planned out their future in making a band.
As soon as they got out of high school, Ryan and Patrick moved to San Marcos. It looked like a good place to start. San Marcos is conveniently located between Austin and San Antonio, two hotspots for live music.
Ryan was hearing things about a hardcore drummer living in San Marcos. He was known for kicking some serious ass on the drums. Later on he got to meet him.
Wade Burchard(drums) has been playing drums since junior high. By the time he hit high school he was playing gigs in San Antonio. Playing drums has always come naturally to him.
When Ryan and Wade met they set up a day to jam out. At practice, there was an uncanny fit of attitude and musical direction with the three. Wade immediately joined up with them. All that was left was a guitarist.
Mike Parker, actually from Dallas, moved down to attend SWT like Wade. He spent most of his time playing guitar, partying, and working at an on-campus pool hall. It was pure chance that Wade ended up being his manager at the pool hall.
Mike was looking for a band, but he wasn’t having much luck. Most people weren’t as serious as he was about music. He was looking to make something special, something unique.
One day at work Wade and Mike started talking, and they both found out about their plans for the future. They also had the same love for hardcore music. They’d talk about bands like TOOL and Deftones. Wade asked Mike if he was interested in practicing with the band one day. Mike gladly accepted.
The first time the whole band met was in that tiny practice room they still play in today. It was suitable, since they would be spending the next year and a half jamming in that room. They played that night, and everything fit.
The first live gig for the band was a Battle of the Bands on SWT campus. Competing with much more experienced bands, subject:defect won second place and $250. All the money was put into making their first demo, Sinus.
Sinus was produced, mixed, and mastered at a cozy little recording studio called Austin to Boston. With barely any money to spare, all the bandmates threw down their tracks in record time. Most of Sinus was recorded on one take. It’s amazing how crisp and clear the final product is, considering the short amount of time the band had. In only thirty hours, subject:defect laid down 6 intricate songs. Each song is at the heart of what the band is about.
With a new demo, the whole band turned into a bunch of promoters, relentlessly advertising and getting gigs. People can find subject:defect playing in Austin at The Back Room and Flamingo Cantina. In San Marcos, the band has played at The Triple Crown and Lucy’s Retired Surf Bar. They even started playing far away from home, such as Fanneli’s in Victoria and Lucky’s Saloon in Dallas.
All the live gigs were sort of a crash-course on playing live. subject:defect was passing the test with flying colors. But more than anything, the band was focused on writing more songs.
Between each live gig, the band came together and wrote new riffs, beats, and vocals. Newly finished material began to pop up almost every month. Songs such as Hand of God, Fusca Renatra, and Sunburn began to pop up in the set list. Each song tells its own story. Hand of God is about power, Fusca Renatra about ignorance, Sunburn about coming too close to God.
Pretty soon people wanted recordings of the new material. The band actually had most songs recorded on a mini-disc they brought to gigs. Wade decided to pick out the best recordings, and subject:defect:live was made. The live recording of Craze was turned into a music video. The video is shown regularly on Austin Music Network.
Lately, subject:defect has been doing the same thing it has done for the past year and half: gigging, jamming out, and getting wasted. They’re still writing new material, jamming and rocking out clubs all around Texas. The only thing these guys aren’t doing is slowing down.
