Press Reviews
BURY MET - FRiDAY 10th AUGUST 2001
I'd heard a lot about More Than Here and how they were supposedly an 'emo-core' band, and rather cynically dismissed them as just another LTJ/Blink/NFG covers band. A look at their 'influences' on the website didn't do much to change my mind either (Radish? Silverchair? Emo?)! Yet within 30 seconds of More Than Here's first song lurching out of the speakers all those judgements proved, thankfully, to be completely false! MTH play music which can best be described as emo-punk. Less cheesy than the Get-Up Kids, MTH's songs have a way of surprising you because just when you think you have the measure of a song, they'll throw another melody or guitar line in there leaving you wondering how they did it! This is the better side of the 'emo' genre, it doesn't descend into navel-gazing, self-pitying howling at any point, remaining upbeat yet heartfelt at all times. The audience wasn't terribly receptive to MTH, mind you, unless you sounded like Incubus or the Red Hot Chilli Pepper's you weren't going to go down too well with this crowd. Aside from a few moments when the U.S influence was obvious, MTH had a distinctly British feel about them, which again is admirable in the current musical climate. They're gigging around Manchester in the coming months, so if you see them on a bill, get your emo-self along to it!
