Artist description
Fringe, the conceptual alter-ego of LA-based producer Colin Johnson, has just produced his first full-length audio recording, entitled Trace Elements. Fringe melds an eclectic group of musical influences into a new music genre, which has yet to be classified into any snappy, consumer-friendly handle. One full year of composing, mixing, arranging, and producing has yielded an effort that mixes drum and bass, breakbeat, ambient, avant-garde, and downtempo rhythms. This music was designed for dance floor, auto, or in-home consumption. Fringe has been distributing his album, to an enthusiastic audience, since July 15th, 2001 on his own imprint, Ecumenical Diaspora Music. Since then, he has garnered interest from several record companies, local radio stations (KCRW, KPFK), and music licensers (CBS, MTV). In preparation of a May 2002 performance at a massive so-cal rave, Fringe has been performing at small club venues such as Zen, The Martini Lounge, The Garage, and Lush. For a copy of Trace Elements, please pick one up at Aftahour Records on Western in Koreatown or email a request to fringemusic@yahoo.com. |

Press Reviews
"Music supervisors and indie films may like what they hear on this disc from Fringe maestro Colin Johnson, who came up through LA's rave underground. The beat heavy "Pre-Cipitation", the skittering, sci-fi tinged "Uprooted", and the most adventurous item here -the clanking, industrial "Splinters"- show promise in regards to filmic treatments. Johnson has a sure grip on the d&B genre..." -Music Connection magazine |
