 | | | | Press Reviews On the surface, this album is a little more laid back and cruisey than "Yin Yang Dang", but it is still has the energy and passion that has made Crumpet the success they are today. While described as 'urban funk groove' in their press release, they have expanded their genres to include a more bluesy, jazzy, swingy feel, complete with brass, in addition to their usual acoustic style and their own Crumpet funkiness. In 'Doo Dar', possibly a sardonic commentary on the relationship between art and reality in the world of the musician, there are tiny hints of Jeff Buckley and Sting in the vocal melody. The poetic evoking of certain themes in some of the lyrics is a continuation of ideas in some of their earlier songs, such as the illusions to the various guises of belief, faith and the search for a guiding star; "I've read Matthew 28 so I wont be late" in 'Doo Dar'; and the more obvious "don't wait for a star sign" in Crush. This CD is just as good to dance to as their previous release, with a difference; it involves the whole gamut from leaping about wildly to lying down with eyes shut. The new version of 'Bible Badger' created an entirely different attitude to the words with its deliciously lazy sound. Crumpet have come a long way, and they keep getting better.
