    Press Reviews
Press Reviews, Comments and E-mails: Musician's Trade Journal December 1999-Review by Billy Dare...The Old World self-released CD Eastern Walk: "Talk about orginal, The Old World of Milford,NH bring a unique and superb talent to the table on their second CD release Eastern Walk. Using drums, bass and guitar, The Old World also adds flute, clarinet, harmonica, piano and mandolin to the mix to create their trademark acoustic alterna/rock sound with a strong retro feel...Tidal Wave and Tornado are the standout songs with this reviewer."*********Review by William Hoffman-Editor-Jam Music Magazine July 1999: "The Old World is a Milford,NH band that people would not soon forget after listening to the band's first CD Of All Great Things. This quartet is beyond tradional description. Yes, they are a rock band, but are they a groove or jam band? or are they a modern/prog rock outfit? Confused? Let me explain. The Old World's music consists of acoustic guitars, bass, mandolin, flute, piano, clarinet, banjo and drums. There's less in direct comparison to existing artists than there is to time. The opening two tracks "Chattery Teeth" and "The Settler" are outstanding cuts lead by catchy acoustic hooks and great bass lines. "Chattery Teeth" begins with acoustic guitar welcoming the listener in, then Richard Steen comes in and sings with a unique voice. Drummer John Krieger harmonizes well in the choruses. "The Settler" opens with Michael Miragliuolo trading the acoustic guitar for a mandolin lead hook, which again meshes well with the bass line provided by Keith Longval. These two songs typify the tremendous ability and songcrafting The Old World presents. It's Jethro Tull, Phish, early 70's prog. rock, and late 90's jazz-influenced rock all in one".........."Ya, I do have a firm grasp on your stuff, and I dig it.Thanks for making cool music." Galaxygoddess-Amazon.com review. ************************ The Old World-"of all great things"12 Track CD:Recorded,Produced,Mixed and Mastered by: The Old World and Gary Agresti at The Sound Studio,Amherst,NH. Holy Aqualung, Batman! I haven't heard a flute used effectively in contemporary music for quite a while, but The Old World does a fairly good job of it. That, coupled with mandolin, clarinet, piano, banjo, and the classic 'guitar, bass, and drums' combo, gives these guys somewhat of an old-world, traditional flavor. One of The Old World's strengths is their harmonized vocals, (often covering the low, mid, and high ranges), which gives the band a full, warm sound the complements the music quite nicely. The richly-strummed acoustic guitar nicely couches the occasional melodic solos. In fact, all the instruments sound great, a result of excellent recording and mixing, and considerable musicianship. The album moves quickly into a few particularly good tunes;"Titanic", "Of All Great Things", "Eastern Walk", and "Quick Star Pilot". Of All Great Things is a deep and dramatic work, lyrically rich in parables and poetry. "And in the time it takes/ for one sweet seething second/ we had a chance to sleep with a ghost/ sitting on the deck of a ship called tyranny/ and she made it all seem to be so easy". Usually lyrics like these turn out sounding more corny than epiphanic, but here they are pulled off with genuine flair. The Old World are definitely reviving some early '70s, post-hippie, jam-rock; sipping a bit of psilocybin tea, and walking around barefoot, but showering and shaving nonetheless.Review by Rev. Keith W. Harris of the Northeast Performer magazine. December 1998 Issue.
