GLORITONE members Tim Anthonise, Dan Lancelot and Nick Scropos have been mainstays of the local club scene in the Tempe/Phoenix area, and they decided with this band to play music for the same reason they first picked up instruments as kids. For fun! That was just back in September 96. Gloritone has since recorded its debut album, Cup Runneth Over, on Kneeling Elephant Records (through The RCA Records Label). This is back-to-the-basics, guitar-driven pop. From the hard-hitting, first single "Halfway" to the post-punk "Speed of Sound" and the melancholy "Walking Dead," the songs are all tied together by Tims sardonic lyrics. The lanky singer deals with lifes difficulties through the therapy of his writing, at times questioning his identity as he mourns a past of betrayal, lies, romantic disillusionment, guilt and rejection. "My best material, my most honest and personal revelations, comes from when Im depressed or upset," explains Tim. "Im actually a very happy, positive person, but I write about being pushed around and knocked down." Or pulled into the mud ("She Was A Good Thing"), having his organs ripped out ("Cut My Heart"), imagining himself the cloud in everyones silver lining ("When Grey Skies Come") and even buried by your memories underneath the couch ("Last Rites from the Coffee Table"). "Melody is everything to me," says Tim, who counts pop songs going back to the 40s and 50s through Patsy Cline, Nat King Cole and Johnny Mathis; to the Beatles; up through Bob Mould and My Bloody Valentine, among his musical influences. His unorthodox guitar-playing expresses an array of emotions. Recording the album brought the band out of the desert heat for six weeks in Los Angeles with engineer-turned-producer Bradley Cook [Foo Fighters, Counting Crows, Fu Manchu], who recorded the band in all its raw form. "We tried to capture the way we sound," says Tim. "If a room had a really cool sound to it, wed do the vocals or bring the guitars in and record right there. Ninety-eight percent of the record is how it sounded in the room. Theres no shellac." "We werent afraid to try anything," says Chicago native, bassist Nick Scropos, who along with drummer Dan Lancelot, pushed Tim into the front-mans role. "We didnt limit ourselves to a single musical style. Whatever worked." "Tim has always been able to get stuff out of me musically no other guitar player can," says Dan, who has played with Anthonise in two previous bands. "Music is the only place I feel normal," says Tim. "Ive always been very insecure," he concludes. "Theres a lot of stuff to contemplate on this album." Another fulfilling part of Gloritone completing Cup Runneth Over is now the trio is finally able to spend more time out of the hot desert sun with a greater diversity of scenery than the local flora. "We wont be taking a pet cactus on the road," says Dan, "that is for sure."
