Artist History
Formed in Bremen in 1997, Big Unit began as a percussion only outfit: four men with the simple desire to make a lot of noise, rhythmically. Having never played a live gig they moved to London in summer 2000, and it was here that they began to find their sound.
The next twelve months saw their numbers swell to nine but harmony proved elusive, and frequent arguments meant that tracks often took weeks to complete.
It was a short-lived but influential three week collaboration with a Japanese student in the summer of 2001 that led to 'The Root of Sound' and a fundamental change in direction.
The rest of that year was dedicated to the production of their first album, 'The Broken Sounds of Big Unit', released in January 2002. Their second album, 'Things You Don't Want To Hear', follows this Winter and builds on their Tokyo inspired vision.
Sadly tensions were still rife, and in the now legendary 'Lido Café Incident' in August 2002 the original members sacked everyone, including themselves. Two of the original members returned to Bremen, while the other two remain in London.
