Artist description
You could say music is in his blood. Jason Scheff, son of Elvis Presley's longtime bass player, Jerry Scheff, released his first solo CD, "Chauncy", on Shemps Records in 1997.
Jason is currently lead tenor vocalist and bass player for the super group Chicago, and is known for such hits as Chicago's "Will You Still Love Me," which climbed to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1986, and "What Kind of Man Would I Be" which landed at the #5 spot in 1990.
Most poignant of his compositions is the song "Bigger Than Elvis" which Chicago released on their 1996 album Overtime. This autobiographical song depicts a son coming to terms with an absentee father. Accompanied by Elvis' backup singers, the Jordonaires and by his father on bass, Jason sings of seeing his father performing with Elvis and the emotions this appearance evokes.
Jason began performing with his singer/pianist mother at the age of 14 and quickly built a reputation and following on the Southern California club scene .
At the age of 23, he was invited to join Chicago, playing bass and taking the tenor lead vocals. He quickly won over dedicated, long time fans as well as casual listeners with his electrifying bass technique and soaring vocal range.
After the early successes of his composition "Will You Still Love Me" and the top 20 tune "If She Would Have Been Faithful," Jason received BMI's Winning Song Award for the tune he penned for Boz Scaggs "Heart of Mine." These accolades were followed in 1990 with another BMI Winning Song Award for the Chicago tune "What Kind of Man Would I Be."
After 16 years with Chicago, Jason continues to deliver with tender precision, and rocks audiences with his sensational style and powerful voice. The summer of 1997 found Chicago on familiar ground sitting atop the charts with their #1 hit, "Here In My Heart" which appears on their 30th anniversary album, Heart Of Chicago. On this ballad, Jason shares the lead vocals with fellow Chicago member, Bill Champlin, and adds beautiful, tight harmonies, which have become so closely identified with the band.
A prolific and talented songwriter, he has written "Come Back Home" for Carly Simon and Jeff Lorber, as well as George Benson's "Starting All Over."
In addition to his work with Chicago, Jason is a popular session artist. He has contributed his bass expertise and/or vocals to the works of such artists as: Cher, Julio Iglesias, George Benson, Barry Manilow, Kenny Rogers, David Foster, Neil Diamond, The Commodores, Johnny Gill, Gino Vanelli, Melissa Manchester and Roy Orbison. He wrote and sang lead on "Young" for the movie soundtrack "How I Got Into College" and with Chicago, made the music video, "Hearts In Trouble" in conjunction with the "Days Of Thunder" soundtrack. Recently, Jason cut an acapella album, West Coast All Stars, California Dreamin', with other vocal giants Bill Champlin, Joseph Williams and Bobby Kimball. He has joined various artists in contributing lead and background vocals to several compilation albums released in Japan, as well as tribute albums to French singers, Edith Piaf and George Brassens. He also worked on the tribute album to Jeff Porcaro, (founding member and drummer for Toto).
"Chauncy" is Jason's first solo endeavor and is a collection of original songs that feature beautiful vocals and innovative instrumental performance. The album, which he also produced, offers listeners both his virtuoso bass work and his talents on the keyboards. Several musicians such as John Keane, Tim Pierce, Brandon Fields, and Luis Conte join him on the album. A scintillating experience for the listener, this album is unquestionably Jason Scheff's greatest accomplishment to date giving an indication that the best is yet to come. |
